Question Re: Lincoln Center Recording of Shows

I am writing a paper and need to find the policy or guidelines for going to the Library and watching recording of original broadway shows. I went to their website but it was tough to find it. Does anyone know where I could find it, preferably a website? Thanks kids...

Try here:

http://www.nypl.org/research/lpa/the/the.html

What you are looking for is the "Rose Collection", and also the TOFT collection. Click on "Using the Archive", that should give you the information that you need. The "Theatre on Film and Tape" is where the tapes of the shows are.

If you want to see what shows they actually have, try here:

(I agree, it's not easy to find!)

re: Question Re: Lincoln Center Recording of Shows

Just be specific and confident and have a good reason on paper - an audition for a specific production, a paper for a specific class, an interview with a specific performer and they won't scrutinize.

Typically, the only videos that are off limits are workshops and shows still running on Broadway. There are exceptions, of course. The Jerome Robbins stuff is restricted as I think is some of the Michael Bennett. It also takes time for the editing process, so they might not have something from last season, say, IN MY LIFE available yet for viewing.

re: Question Re: Lincoln Center Recording of Shows

I used to work there. They try to make it difficult, but they know they can't because it's funded by taxpayer's money.

Just have a good reason for wanting to watch the video. (Just because you missed it on Broadway isn't a good reason). You need to use it as a source for collecting information for a paper, or news article, or production.

My suggestion though is to call them ahead of time if you have a specific show in mind. Some of the videos need permission from the author.

And I believe you can only watch a particular video once. You can't return and watch the same show over and over.

Michael Bennett, you are right about the Michael Bennett stuff. It was about 14 years ago, but I had to get permission from the attorney for his estate to watch DREAMGIRLS. I did a search today when this topic came up, and now it's not even listed as part of their collection.

"They don't have the original Chicago?"

Theater on Film & Tape was just getting started in the mid 1970's, so the material from that time period is sketchy. They had a hard time convincing Actor's Equity that it was beneficial to make recordings of Broadway shows. Now AE acknowledges that these videos can be watched by Broadway replacements and understudies to get up to speed on the show.

re: Question Re: Lincoln Center Recording of Shows

They don't have much before 1980 - just a few scattered things like the 1971 touring production of COMPANY and A CHORUS LINE at the Public. I think the actual rule is that you can't watch the same video more than one time within a 12 month period.
