I did see the revival twice.
It confused me both times though.
When the lights fade does that mean her dream is fading/ gone?

It means the show is over.
The curtain call comes right after to validate this.

Posted: 4/21/08 at 8:52pmhonestly, I had no idea about that new ending, but I enjoyed it a helluva lot more that the Mendes ending. Also, watching it from the front row was great, seeing Patti just loose it like that

The "Mendez" ending is the one Laurents originally wrote and used in every other Broadway production.
The "new" one confused me too.
Has Rose learned her lesson or not?
Feel free to discuss your interpretation.

Posted: 4/21/08 at 9:46pmI prefer the tradition ending where Rose and Louise exit arm in arm. There is a peace and hope and resolve. The new ending is very odd.

The more I see it, the more I see the ending as a sort of spot where Rose's Turn left off. She sees her name, and she reaches for it, because that's everything she wanted - the be the star, for her name to be in lights. And then it begins to fade, signifying the possibilities of it all happening. Despite it going out though, the final image we get is Rose standing there, reaching for the Rose sign. I interpreted that as Rose just plain old not letting go, despite everything that happened.
Personally, I absolutely love the changed ending. Part of me feels like it's just more realistic. I think she does feel remorse, without question; however, she still cannot let go of her dream.
Edited for poor word choice.

Traditional original ending: Rose and Louise exit, arm in arm.
New ending: Louise exits, laughing at her mother. Rose reaches up toward the "Rose" sign, which flickers a bit.

Posted: 4/21/08 at 9:59pmDunno...I bet we could tinker with the end of all the classic musicals. But why?

SPOILER:
In the original ending Rose and Louise play out the scene and Rose and Louise exit together, and there is a glimmer that maybe Rose has learned something and there may or may not be a shift in their relationship. (thus fullfilling Rose's Turn, and her breakdown).
The new ending has Louise exitibg by herself and the Giant ROSE sign comes down and Patti looks at it and hugs herself and then leaves.
I find it strange because the ROSE lights are suppose to be in Rose's mind and part of her breakdown, when it comes back, I didn't understand the point.
That's just me.

Exactly. I had someone on these boards say tell me that Rose does NOT change. And that her character does NOT grow. And that this was the entire point of the show.
This person told me to 'look up' the real Rose and then I would know that she did not change at all. Oh yes, it was Midnightradio.
Of course, I don't subscribe to his opinion. But that's what I was told.

Posted: 4/21/08 at 10:16pmit's just so powerful, and i'm not sure if it's her neccessarily not letting go of her dream, more of her trying to turn aback to it, but it being shattered
re: Question about the ending of gypsy#20
Posted: 4/21/08 at 10:18pmI think she DID change and she DID learn something. However, the ending obviously shows that there's still a little part of her that doesn't want to let go of her dream.
re: Question about the ending of gypsy#21
Posted: 4/21/08 at 10:20pmRight...and in the traditional ending, I never felt that Rose gave up her dreams. I didnt need to SEE it to know it.
re: Question about the ending of gypsy#22
Posted: 4/21/08 at 10:24pmWell this is a different interpretation of it. Sorry you happen to not like it.

Well, the real Rose was also bisexual and may have murdered someone, but that's not what the authors were writing about.
As much as we know that Rose is a stage-mother-monster the beauty of the show and the actresses who play her is that she takes a "journey" and the play gives her a redeeming moment to walk off hand in hand with her daughter (in her mink coat).
That was part of the beauty of the piece, watching the actress take the plunge.
Rose will always have her DREAMS, that is implicit and we don't need to be hitten over the head with it at the end.
