Does anybody know what RENT will be rated or when they're going to release the rating?

Posted: 8/18/05 at 1:01amI don't think they've announced it "officially" yet, but Columbus has said it will end up rated R, as it probably should be. One good thing about the Thanksgiving nation-wide release is that I'll turn 17 on the 20th. YAY, ME!!

R, for sure --
And the rating will be released when the studio shows the finished product to the MPAA (Motion Picture Association of America). The MPAA will tell them what the rating is, and most likely inform them of what needs to be taken OUT if the studio plans to go for a PG-13 rating... which... they won't. Thank god.
Expect an official R-rating within the next month, because main post-production for the film should be close to complete by the end of September.

If it's R, they can say goodbye to all the teenie Rentheads.
And they NEED them.

Posted: 8/18/05 at 1:09amFirst of all, if the teenie Rentheads want to see it, they will one way or another. Chances are, if they are Rentheads, their parents know enough about it to either let them go, or choose to not let them go (and if they make the latter decision, chances are they'll find other ways to see it).

it'll be rated R -- the themes and drug use ALONE consitute for an R-rating. If the ratings board is strict about anything, it's usually drug use. (Even sex and a bit of language and violence can be swayed to PG-13 on occasion).
And as for the teen fans... They'll find a way in (I work at a movie theater, I know). and their parents will most likely take them if they are over 13 or 14. Either way, it's not like they'll NEVER see it. It's forever captured on film for all eternity. And they become adults eventually, so no worries there.

You're right. A lot of Rent fans are younger than 17 and they're going to be losing a lot of revenue from a great potential audience.
Lots of us are going to see it anyway though...

The age of the fans isn't really a reason to change the rating. And plenty of people under 17 see R-rated movies. It's not that difficult.
Gonna be R. Has to be.

Well.. I remember hearing once. MTV isn't allowed to show previews for R movies.
I don't know if this true. But if they can't promote to the MTV audience, they are SCREWED. Broadway audiences aren't enough for a high profile movie.
#15re: RENT will be rated...what?
Posted: 8/18/05 at 1:12amReally? But... there's stuff on MTV that's worse than a preview for an R-rated movie.

guessing it will have: Adult language, adult situations, adult content
An R-rated film may include hard language, or tough violence, or nudity within sensual scenes, or drug abuse or other elements, or a combination of some of the above, so that parents are counseled, in advance, to take this advisory rating very seriously. Parents must find out more about an R-rated movie before they allow their teenagers to view it.
IF THE PANEL HAS A FEW CATHOLICS, CONSERVATIVES, OR GEORGE W. BUSH:
NC-17:"No One 17 And Under Admitted."
This rating declares that the Rating Board believes that this is a film that most parents will consider patently too adult for their youngsters under 17. No children will be admitted. NC-17 does not necessarily mean "obscene or pornographic" in the oft-accepted or legal meaning of those words. The Board does not and cannot mark films with those words. These are legal terms and for courts to decide. The reasons for the application of an NC-17 rating can be violence or sex or aberrational behavior or drug abuse or any other elements which, when present, most parents would consider too strong and therefore off-limits for viewing by their children

Posted: 8/18/05 at 1:13amIt's pretty rare for such mainstream movies to have NC-17 ratings. And I think RENT's language alone will nab it an R rating.
#18re: RENT will be rated...what?
Posted: 8/18/05 at 1:14amthe show is approaching its 10th year on broadway... i'm sure those who have seen over all of those years are interested in seeing it on screen, and they are probably over 17 by now.

jam-man: hahha, you know... You're totally right. It's unfortunate, but true.
I retract my previous statement
But either way, I don't think Rent will suffer greatly from not having the advantage of the younger age group. In reality, it has adult themes and issues, that - while I agree they're topics that everyone and their MOTHER should take in and understand - I'm sure there will be reasons for the R-rating and the studio shouldn't change the potential "raw" impact of the film just to pander to a younger audience. That wouldn't be fair to the audience OR the original Broadway show (or to Jonathon's vision).

Posted: 8/18/05 at 1:15amWell then, ljay889, we're going to have to be like the Star Wars people and see it about 20 times each! I have a lot of those friends, and I'm among them (saw Sith 3 times in the first 3 days, though that's not too much next to some of my friends).

It's not going to be NC-17. The theatre I work at doesn't show NC-17 movies, and they already have RENT on their list for movies going to that theatre. Movies are pretty rarely NC-17... unless they are "Mature" movies and RENT is not that type of a movie.

But see, they do need to promote to a mainstream audience. Ofcourse the director wanted to keep true to Johnathon's original vision BUT the producers want to MAKE money. And if that means promoting to a younger audience - they will go against Larson's vision. Producers want money out of this - Johnathon's vision isn't #1 on their mind.
They need to attract teens into pop/rock music with Rent's score. They need teens to want to see this movie because of it's cool music.

in response to the suggestion that Rent could possibly be rated NC-17...
THAT IS IMPOSSIBLE. PERIOD. I'm telling you right now, that has no chance of happening. Only films with gratuitous SEX, graphic drug-use, or HORRIFIC violence (such as rape, etc.) get NC-17 ratings. It's really hard for language to push the board to vote for an NC-17 rating over an R rating. You can get away with a LOT of bad language, and Rent isn't trashy like a lot of teen R-rated films are nowadays. If there's language, sex, or drug use, it'll be done tastefully (maybe slightly graphic, but not hardly enough for a tough NC-17 outcome).
And MtV shows previews for R-rated films. Wedding Crashers?? American Pie 1, 2 and Wedding??? all those things had ads like crazy aimed at MtV audiences, and they were all rated R. They made a lot of money too. Go figure. If teens wanna see a movie, they find a way. And studios know this.
The producers are not going to force Chris to cut up this film for a PG-13 rating. That's insulting, and they went into this film with the intention of using the film medium to SHOW things that couldn't be shown on stage in a realistic way. That won't go down the drain. R it'll be.
