Tomorrow (January 25th) marks the 12 year anniversary of Jonathan Larson's death. And I just wanted to post this so we could remember him.
RIP Jonathan.
And although RENT may be closing...it won't be forgotten. And neither will you.
/End my corny message.
I just felt like it had to be said.

Posted: 1/24/08 at 8:19pmI think, instead of naming the theatre after him, as some have suggested, that they should put some sort of candle memorial outside the theatre. One of those candles that never burns out. An eternal flame.

Posted: 1/24/08 at 8:25pmYou're going to name the theatre after a man who, despite the unfortunate circumstances, wrote ONE show? ONE, and it isn't really that good to begin with before you rename the Imperial after Ethel Merman? My goodness! I can think of five people who deserve to have the Nederlander named after them more than the late Mr. Larson.

"An eternal flame."
That's just what the neighborhood needs. A big, open flame for people to burn their trash or whatever.

I personally HATE Rent onstage. I'll stick with the movie...
I did feel that Jonathon himself deserved some recognition, I mean..it is kind of sad that he died the day before opening night.

"Tick Tick Boom feels more like Side By Side By Sondheim than an original musical to me. That's why I didn't include it as a part of his work."
So you're going to forget about all his hard work on it because it doesn't "sound" like his music? Right.

i see people on here have the usual tact when they are talking about someone who died tragically young.
And he may have only written one Major musical, but that musical has had more of an impact than most composers body of work
show some damn respect or dont post in a forum about J Larson.
and yes Rent may be closing but it will live on for a long time to come (Broadway isn't the only place shows play in the world you know)
RIP JL

Posted: 1/24/08 at 9:58pmJonathan's first musical "Sacrimmoralinority" was co-written while in college. It was retitled "Saved!-An Immoral Musical on the Moral Majority" when it played in Manhattan. His next musical was "Superbia," and although it was never fully produced, it won the Richard Rodgers Production Award. "tick, tick... BOOM!" was next to be written. It is an original musical about Jonathan's life while writing "Superbia." "tick, tick... BOOM! played on Broadway and on tour to critical acclaim after Jonathan's untimely death, and is nothing like the musical revue "Side By Side By Sondheim." There is no denying "Rent" changed the world of musical theater forever, and I personally cant think of anyone more deserving of an accolade like having a theatre named after him than Jonathan Larson.
