Why is it closing? I'm really surprised at this one. Weren't they aimming to go to Broadway?
Is that still in talks or is that not going to happen now?
I really thought this show would be around A LOT longer!

If a show is going to move to Broadway, it almost ALWAYS has to close off-Broadway first
coolkid. you're so....cool!
Just because the off b'way production is closing, doesn't mean that B'way is no longer in the plan. They often revamp a show between one and the other.

So I guess this isn't the end for Rock of ages right?
Will the same cast be transfering?
Isn't Will supposed to do Hair?
The article says they may be aiming for Broadway.

i heard from a friend that the cast was notified that the show is going to transfer to Broadway. Hence the closing off broadway. Not sure which cast members are making the transition. I do think Will is going to Hair though (if there even is a Hair to go to).
If I get any new updates, I'll gladly post them here.

coolkid, don't forget In The Heights closed for nine months before going to Broadway.
FYI - birdie told me Brooks is likely to get the show.
Mel Brooks???
That would be a mistake.
(yeah I get it)
I was one of the people who thought IN THE HEIGHTS could never make it on Broadway because it couldn't even sell Off-Broadway.
And I was Dead Wrong.
Maybe they can pull this off with enough drugs, sex and rock and roll, and a few beers too.
Wow, so this makes 9 shows closing that day now? Even with the Broadway transfer for this particular show January 4 is going to be a dark day on Broadway. I wonder if 20 or so years from now theatre historians will have given January 4, 2008 its own name. "Broadway's Darkest Day" or something along those lines.
Umm, I believe "Brooks" is referring to the Brooks Atkinson Theater, which is rumored to be the new Broadway home of Rock of Ages come this spring.
I have heard that more details may be coming later this week, but unlike the other 8 shows closing on the 4th of January, this closing is a GOOD thing...and merely temporary.
But I agree, the 4th will be a sadly momentous day in Broadway history. *sigh*

i for one hope it doesnt go to the brooks, I hate that theatre and the box office people there seem to dislike me- refusing to sell me tickets on 2 separate occassions, but im thrilled at the idea of a transfer. i would just imagine it in a more intimate space. the way cabaret(studio 54) had their seating would be a fun way to work with a bigger space. even circle in the square would be fun, it can feel like the show is all around you instead of just in front of you. The way the set overhangs into the audience space at NWS is one of my fav things about the show and coupled with the unexpected entrances through the audience- its like youre sitting at a table in the bourbon room watching the craziness unfold... I hope they find a way to keep that aspect.
Thank God. Sucks for the actors, but...this show was just an embarrassment.
Calm down, chilluns. It's to close Off-Broadway on January 4.... and open on Broadway at the Brooks Atkinson Theatre in March 2009.
A brilliant move to close now, before the transfer. Why suffer through the dead winter months when you can just keep the demand high and come back strong in the spring? Ingenious.
Like it or not, this show is stupid fun. Revolutionary theatre? No. But fun, you bet your ass.
