ROCK OF AGES was the worst show I've seen in years...

...and I loved EVERY F*CKING SECOND OF IT.

When that show ended tonight my throat was sore from yelling so loud and all I wanted was for it to start right back up again. Seriously, for an 80's junkie like myself this is what I've been waiting for for a LONG time.

I have a really strong feeling this show is going to last FOREVER!

It's not bad like it's painful to sit through. It's bad as in the book doesn't try to be Shakespeare and the show is just light, fluff. But the show knows it's a show called "Rock of Ages." It's not trying to be profound. It's just fun. And it serves its purpose.

I'm trying to go back to see it next week and the tickets seem few and far between to get.

I enjoyed it as well. What works for it is the soundtrack of constant 80's hits, as well as the "rock concert" vibe.

If you're expecting a life-changing piece of theater, you're not going to get it. So if you go in with that notion, you'll enjoy yourself.

Thanks for the review. I'm glad they've maintained the energy of the off-Broadway show.

I think some of the initial over-the-top contentious threads have given ROA the reputation of a "Plan 9 from Outer Space" or a "Showgirls." And I think once that myth permeates a community it's hard to shake. The truth is, though--and this coming from someone who worships Sondheim and listens to Show Boat at least once a week--ROA is good fun and it's not a bad show at all. It's not a *deep* show; it's not groundbreaking theatre; it's not life-changing. But the acting is decent, the singing is good, and the book is so resolutely tongue-in-cheek that it does elevate the material from any potential corn. I'd even argue that because it doesn't take itself seriously it's better than many other non-deep, non-groundbreaking, non life-changing shows out there that try to pretend they're great art. It's just a fun show, and it does what it's supposed to do very well.

I am simultaneously PROUD and HORRIFIED to admit that I KNEW THE LYRICS TO EVERY SONG, even before the actors started singing them!

And I SHAMELESSLY SANG ALONG WITH EVERY NUMBER. . . . sometimes in HaRmOnY.

I mean, come on folks, I'm as big a theater geek as it gets, and I couldn't even do that with Mamma Mia!

GO ROCK OF AGES! You . . . well . . . ROCK!
