Rachel Weisz to Star in West End STREETCAR Revival

"Oscar winner Rachel Weisz is to play Blanche Dubois in a West End version of A Streetcar Named Desire.

Weisz, who won a best supporting actress Oscar in 2006 for The Constant Gardener, will appear on stage in July.

The Tennessee Williams revival will take place at London's Donmar Warehouse and is directed by Rob Ashford. No other cast details have been released.

Weisz was last seen on the London stage in the Almeida's 2001 production of Neil LaBute's The Shape of Things..."

Tonya Pinkins: Then we had a "Lot's Wife" last June that was my personal favorite. I'm still trying to get them to let me sing it at some performance where we get to sing an excerpt that's gone.
Tony Kushner: You can sing it at my funeral.

She's a bit young for it, and I'd never think to put her in that role, but I'd love to see what she'd do with it.
"The gods who nurse this universe think little of mortals' cares. They sit in crowds on exclusive clouds and laugh at our love affairs. I might have had a real romance if they'd given me a chance. I loved him, but he didn't love me. I wanted him, but he didn't want me. Then the gods had a spree and indulged in another whim. Now he loves me, but I don't love him." - Cole Porter

I read this on EW magazine and she said she was pretty excited and that Blanche is one of her dream roles. Isn't she around the same age as Cate Blanchett who is playing the role in the Australian production?
I wonder if they are getting an all-star cast. Rob Ashford is quite a hot director nowadays.

Agreed, they should just alternate the role on Broadway re: Rachel Weisz to Star in West End STREETCAR Revival

It's not like Blanche is 50. She's just always acting younger than her actual age. Weisz is 37, the same age Vivien Leigh was when making the film and only one year younger than Tandy was in the original production. I think she's a wonderful choice.

I wonder if this is at the Donmar itself or at the Donmar in the West End, i.e. Wyndham's Theatre, where they're doing a season now. Hope for the latter which is a beautiful theatre with wonderful sight lines. The Donmar home base is a small cramped space with bad sight lines for anyone sitting upstairs - and which always sells out early for starry shows.

Very interesting casting. I would definitely go to see this...Rachel Weisz is a brilliant actress.

Speaking of Donmar, Jude Law as Hamlet should be great. That's the kind of Hamlet I want to see...

I really like Rachel and am glad to see she'll be tackling this role!

That last MUMMY movie sucked mainly because She wasn't there to save it, and we had no idea what She had been up to!
