How does American idiot go from being the presumed frontrunner to getting only THREE nominations?
I'm all about the Ragtime love, though.
Why is Promises nominated for orchestrations? Aren't the basically the original...just slightly reduced?

Just noticed that even though they seemed to LOVE Memphis, it did not get a nod for Best Choreography!

Its ridiculous how Tom Kitt isn't nominated for orchestrations. Absolutely crazy.

No Kristin Chenoweth!!!! Pffffffffffft
I'm surprised Norbert wasn't nominated for Enron. I haven't seen the show, but his reviews were all raves.
I'm also surprised James Spader wasn't nominated for Race. Not so much for Kerry Washington, though (ugh). I wonder if Race will continue its run now that it only has that one nomination (for David Alan Grier)...

Aren't Fences and Enron plays? When was the last time two PLAYS got the nomination for best score??

When was the last time that the Best Original Score category was such slim pickins?
So only two revivals are going to perform this year? I would assume they are going to work in Ragtime and Finian somehow.
Looking through the nominations, it's remarkable to me how many I-just-don't-give-a-s**t categories there are (hello Featured Actor in a Musical, Leading Actress in a Musical, Original Score).
Based purely on nominations, the frontrunners for the top categories would APPEAR to be FELA!, RED, LA CAGE and FENCES -- but those first two can't be right... right?
And perhaps it was an inevitability, but if anything, this morning confirmed *sigh* ... I just might have to see MILLION DOLLAR QUARTET.
I also worry what this inevitably means for ENRON... a featured actor nomination and three technical awards are not what it needed to bump up those grosses.
So happy that Ragtime was NOT forgotten. It would have been nice to see a nomination for Quentin Earl Darrington, but I'm happy with the nominations they did receive.
ljay, it's because Jonathan Tunick is nominated just about every year he's eligible. They love him. He's also been nominated for his reductions of Pacific Overtues, Nine and Follies.

Too bad for Lane who's carrying that whole show.
More surprised that golden boy Sergio Trujillo lost out on two shows, Addams Family and Memphis. The latter being most surprising since the choreography dominates that show.
I'm disappointed All About Me wasn't nominated for anything (correct me if I'm wrong). Barry Humphries is a genius and the show was hysterical. No idea what it could have been nominated for (book perhaps? actor?) but I'd hoped Barry would have been recognized somehow.
As sickening as the thought is, we need to start getting used to hearing, "Memphis: Best Musical 2010 Tony Award Winner."

I saw Memphis a few years ago out of town and I never thought it would move to Broadway. Then I saw it when it opened on Broadway and I was sure it wouldn't last until Winter. Now it is June and it was just nominated for 8 Tony Awards and has a REALLY good chance at winning Best Musical. They are really lucky they opened in such an awful season.
Who would have thought?

Best Musical has to be one of the saddest categories.
So happy for Christiane Noll, Kate Baldwin, Christopher Fitzgerald, and Bobby Steggert for beating the odds! Very deserved.
Now what are the chances of these closed revivals actually winning something? I guess my fingers are still crossed!

I'm pulling for it to win only because it's an ORIGINAL musical.
I could not be more pleased about the nominations for Ragtime and Finian's Rainbow. Especially excited that Christiane, Kate, Bobby, and Chris Fitz all got nominations.

Look, I loved Fela! and I love Lillias White, but nominating her for that show is just absurd. Why in God's name would an actress with no character and no characterization, and about 10 minutes of stage time during which all she does is belt her face off like a big black lady, be nominated over Rebecca Naomi Jones, Vanessa Williams, and even Saycon Sengbloh from her own show?
Nevermind. Answered my own question.

I would argue that FELA and AMERICAN IDIOT are far more original than MEMPHIS.
Just noticed the lack of love for Sondheim on Sondheim.
Except I found FELA to be insufferable and AMERICAN IDIOT to not have an original score.
Lilias White absolutely deserved that nomination over Rebecca Naomi Jones. Talk about having no character and nothing to do.
I do think Williams deserved to be nominated.

was hoping for Santino Fontana from Brighton Beach Memoirs and Cotter Smith for Next Fall...
