I heard that they are taking the Happy New Year songs out and turning them into dialoug.

okay, that makes complete sense... maybe one is the track that someone said they were quickly recording that had not been a part of Rent?

Maybe. I also heard that they were recording an extra song for the credits.

Maybe they decided to keep a song that they said was previously cut?

Looks like they already did that with "Halloween" and "Goodbye Love," I could've sworn those were supposed to be cut.
"You'll See" is missing...I'm pretty sure that in going to be in the movie.

They were supposed to be, but they were brought back.

BroadwayGirl107 is right. I believe Columbus said "You'll See" is back in as a musical number. I can't remember where I read it... but I'm sure he said it was recorded as a song.

And aren't they adding another Larson song that will be played during the credits?

I also think You'll See is back in.
I know they said they cut Christmas Bells, but they originaly said that they would still have a couple of the short Christmas Bells that the street people sing. Have you accounted for that?

I'm pretty sure Voice Mail #5 is in the movie. It's the only voice mail in it.

I'll be so happy if "You'll See" is in it! I was so mad when it wasn't there before.

You'll See is in the movie. It was confirmed by Anthony Rapp.

ahh where did the first act go??
I understand why they're gone but I'm going to miss a lot of the tune ups, voice mails, happy new years, homeless songs.
I know I could probably find this somewhere, but who exactly wrote the screenplay? I mean if there's so much new dialogue who's writing it?

There's always "inspired by" type songs on a soundtrack...maybe there's one of those.

Stephen Chbosky and Chris Columbus wrote the screenplay.

According to the online "outtakes" of the interview in OUT magazine, Rosario said: "I think the soundtrack alone just with the singing is an hour fifty. The movie would just be tremendously long to have it all in there, as much as we’d love to. I think the pacing [director Christopher Columbus has] done is really brilliant. Anything that’s been confusing to people will be cleared up, but the integrity of it has been maintained. So people who have been completely in love and savored every single word I don’t think will be disappointed."
Really, in any movie adaptation of a musical, STUFF HAS TO BE TAKEN OUT. Especially regarding one that is almost completely sung through-out, b/c that format does not work well on flim. It seems to me that everything they've taken out and/or changed to dialogue is completely reasonable stuff to do that with. I have faith that they did this the right way. It's not like they're taking those numbers out of the show.
That being said, I'm pretty sure You'll See, Boys and Voice Mail #5 are still included. I also think that the very last song is a credits song, which according to Anthony Rapp is sung by the cast but written by Jonathan Larson.

I get so confused with what's in and what's out, etc, etc. But I think we can expect that even things cut from the movie will be on the soundtrack; perhaps even everything that was recorded, even if it doesn't all end up in the final cuts of the film.

Hi everyone, I am very new to this board and perhaps this isn't even the thread to discuss this, but...I will. It has probably been discussed ad nauseum. I love Broadway and a part of me is sickened that this phenomenal show was turned into a movie. I'm afraid there will not be justice done to the musical and I'm also afraid that it will stop people from experiencing this in the city. Maybe these are irrational fears, esp. since both Taye and Jesse Martin were originals and signed on for the flick. Do any of you feel that turning a smash musical into a movie "cheapens it"?

I'll say this quickly, because I was in your place not long ago. I was (extremely irrationally) afraid that it wouldn't do justice and just... wouldn't be the same. I've come to a point now where I realize that it won't be exactly the same, but that that's okay - I think an important part of that is understanding and accepting that the stage show and the film are two separate entities, no matter how closely they do meet; if you don't see it that way, you're going to be disappointed. Jesse and Taye aren't the only originals; there are six of them. Adam, Anthony, Idina and Wilson are there, too.
They've done so, so so much to preserve the integrity; Jonathan's family has been there for much of the process, and they approve. There are so many people on board who know what Jonathan would've wanted, that most of my doubts have completely faded in the past eight months or so.
Had many, many things been different - ESPECIALLY the casting, I'd have said it was cheap, etc. But no, I don't think so. I think it's going to be beautiful, and I hope you change your mind, too.

Thank you so much for your thoughts on this. A few weeks ago, I saw the trailer at the movies and the music made my eyes tear up. I've pulled out the soundtrack and have been listening to it ever since. I will take your advice and see them as two separate entities. My sincere hope is that people like it enough to want to see it on stage. As silly as it may sound to some, Rent changed my life.
