I know this has been posted over and over but since Spamalot has finally opened to pretty fair reviews, Dirty Rotten Scoundrels opened to mostly positive ones, Good Vibrations and BKLYN opened to poor ones, and Little Women opened to mixed ones, what kind of reviews do we think Spelling Bee, All Shook Up, Light in the Piazza, etc will open to?
And any predictions for this years winner for the Best Musical Tony? I'm leaning towards Spelling Bee.
I was shocked that none of the men of Spamalot got even close to the positive recognition Norbert got. I thought that Tim Curry and David Hyde Pierce would have gotten the raves that Matthew and Nathan got for The Producers but I was totally wrong.
Elphie- that's what i thought about ASsassins but then Cerveris won and i was like WTF!? because none of the actors stood out, so you really never know

Dirty Rotten Scoundrels just has all the taditional confines of a star spangled Broadway Musical and I would LOVE for it to win!
I think Score will go to Yazbeck for DRS has a delicous score and for the Full Monty slight.
Book will probably go to Spelling Bee.

I havent seen CHITTY, LIGHT IN THE PIAZZA, SWEET CHARITY, or SPELLING BEE at its Bway house yet, so things are bound to change. One things for sure - TONS of compition this year will cause for a very exciting Tony Awards!
After seeing La Cage for a second time last week (the first time was in December when it was still previewing), I really think that Daniel Davis has a good shot at the best actor in a musical Tony, if the performance he's giving in May, when the Tony voters are in town, is as strong as the one he gave the other night. He was very much in command of his character and seemed much more relaxed onstage that I remembered.
I thought both Norbet and John were terrific in DRS, but their characters just didn't leave a lasting impression.
bonna, agreed - Davis is certainly the stronger of the 2 leads in LA CAGE, and his performances evokes and demands a strong presence, so eventhough there are TONS of men elegible for lead actor this year, I think Davis would be the best bet at filling that fifth and final slot. Does he have a chance to win, yes, but ever so slightly - Butz is just THAT good!
I think the 5 for lead actor will be as follows: NORBERT LEO BUTZ JOHN LITHGOW DANIEL DAVIS TIM CURRY DAVID HYDE PIERCE
after seeing ASU last night and realizing they are all under the title and Cheyeanne will be considered supporting and nobody is lead in that show!
Although, the above list COULD change with what would have to be amazing performances from Raul Esparza in Chitty or the Tony committee deciding to put Dennis O'Hare in the lead acting category (a role that most certainly is not)!

I really hope that Sara Ramirez will win for best featured actress in a musical- she really, really deserves it. It would be fantastic if Spamalot won best musical too, in my opinion, but I haven't seen many new musicals this year, so I can't really make a prediction.

* Everyone seems to be pushing for Victoria Clark as of late. I have not seen her performance yet, but I look for this to be another "Marissa over Bernadette" or "Idina over Tonya" race. Remeber when Bernadette, although controversially cast, was a shoe-in only to watch Winokur walk away with the gold. Same goes for Pinkins last year. Also, doesn't anyone else think that the fact that Piazza is set to close one week after the Tony's will affect it's chances in any given category? Unless Piazza extends, I wouldn't engrave Clark's Tony just yet, my friends. It sounds absurd, but all these award shows are about politics.
I just came back from All Shook Up and, I hate to say it, but I fear for DRS and Piazza. I think All Shook Up is going to surprise people and grab a Best Musical Nomination. But who is it going to bump off the list? I loved DRS (in fact, it was my favorite so far this season) but I'm afraid the unenthusiastic reception that it received from critics might mean that it might miss out. Light in the Piazza, (which I see later this week, so I’ll have a better idea then) is likely to only appeal to a limit amount of theatergoers if the score is anything like Guettle's past work, so it might be the one to lose out. I doubt Spelling Bee has anything to worry about given it's nearly unanimous positive critical reception, but then again, maybe that will change when it reaches Broadway (I hope not). Nonetheless, I suppose really bad reviews could keep All Shook Up from being nominated, but I would be very surprised to see that happen. So it may be time for everyone to reconsider their predictions for Best Musical nominees.
Oh please, NO WAY IN HELL will that piece of SH*T that is ASU grab a best musical nod. The only way that could ever happen would be if Brooklyn, Dracula, Good Vibrations, and All Shook Up were the only new shows that opened this season! THANK GOD that wasnt the case!

I just want to see Sara Ramirez win...she was absolutely amazing Tuesday night. I sat in the front row and felt so much a part of the show. I hope it does well.
Just curious - live in SF here so only have impressions from sites and publicity - how much of an affect will last year's Avenue Q have on Spelling Bee's chances.
Before you all question my sanity - Spelling Bee sounds curiously like Avenue Q... small show comes from off broadway takes on the big budget shows. After Avenue Q back-doored the out of town voters with its bogus "only in Vegas" road policy, I would think that will hurt these smaller musicals.
As for my out of towner prespective - musical comes down to:

At least we have some quality musical representations this year - as there are actually ones left out. It is not a stretch to fill 4 spaces as there have been in the past (does anyone remember Starmites???). This year seems a lot like the Crazy for You/Jelly's Last Jam season.
