#1Ricky Martin's Coming Out
Posted: 3/29/10 at 5:30pmI avoid getting into dishing the dirt about performers' private lives on this board, but I was really happy about Ricky Martin's "official" announcement re: his sexuality. I know it's been a much-discussed topic and probably isn't the best-kept open secret in the world, but the admission of someone in the celebrity spotlight who might have little to gain and potentially much to lose makes his announcement all the more commendable. It makes me very proud of being a gay man.

That is why we have an off topic board where there is already a thread.

I haven't spent much time on the off-topic board, so I'm glad you posted your thoughts Ed, I feel the same way. In light of all the Evita babble recently, I think your post is ok here...but what do I know.
And...you're not dishing, it's on the abc news website.

Posted: 3/29/10 at 6:29pmTHAT'S what makes it "not dishing." How do you define "dishing"?
#4Ricky Martin's Coming Out
Posted: 3/29/10 at 6:52pmI was defining dishing as gossiping....speculation that is based on rumors. Now, it has been reported that he has acknowledged being gay. So it is not just speculation anymore.

Posted: 3/29/10 at 8:25pmBack on topic...good for him. I don't care either way. This will not affect my desire to live la vida loca nor my desire to "bang." I've always had a soft spot for Ricky. Growing up in a latin household, Ricky Martin, among countless others, was a voice I heard singing a lot. I'm really happy for him.

>>> but the admission of someone in the celebrity spotlight who might have little to gain and potentially much to lose...
But seeing as most of his English-language hits are far in the past (he may still be current in Spanish-language pop, I don't know, but the last time I heard a Ricky Martin song on the radio it was being sung by William Hung), I don't know how much he has to lose. In fact, he may have a lot to gain. Hello, cover of Advocate, Out, etc., etc. And, of course, his coming out makes people even more interested in his future career moves... namely, will he be Che in the Evita revival. His star value just went up today, something that producers will surely take note of.
On the other hand, seeing as he has two small children, he may not be interested in any big career moves.
Whatever the case, people are a lot more interested in Ricky Martin today (he's presently the #1 trending topic on Twitter) than they were yesterday.

Now no one is going to go see him in Evita!
No seriously, congrats to Ricky on finally coming out. Welcome to the other side of the closet door, Mr. Martin.

Why come out at all? This isn't 1970.
What a stupid comment. Do you seriously believe that there is not personal integrity or happiness to be found in honestly acknowledging who you really are?
Do you seriously believe there is no benefit to coming out in a homophobic society that has seen gay marriage overturned by mobs at referendums manipulated by Catholic and Mormon homophobes?
Do you seriously not understand what a significant event this is in the lives of closeted Latinos, to whose families Ricky Martin has remained a cultural icon for three decades?
Do you seriously believe in the question "Why come out?"
Open your eyes and look at the real world.

PalJoey, America really needs to catch up to the rest of the world. Anywhere else in the civilised world this announcement would produce nothing more than a shrug of the shoulders and we would move on.
jpbran, I think you are spot on with your assessment.

"Anywhere else in the civilised world . . ."
Perhaps a finer distinction would be 'anywhere else in the civilised world that isn't hung up on religion'.
Although, an argument can be made that a society hung up on mythology hasn't yet attained civilised status.
