I was thinking the same thing. The hen puppet is pretty cool though. I am eagerly awaiting some new photos to be release. I'm especially interested to see Cinderella's costume.

Posted: 7/27/12 at 7:44pmThe Milky White looks fine onstage and is the least of their worries. So Donna's witch is turning into a tree and Cindy's Mom is already a tree, I see a trend.

I dont understand why they didnt use the english costumes? I mean its mean to be the same production with a different cast.

Cinderella's costumes are hideous.
The London costumes look better than here, anyone know why they were changed?

Posted: 7/27/12 at 10:38pmI actually like Donna's Act 1 costume more than Hannah's.

Saw the show tonight, Stage, Costume and Wig designers should be taken to Belvadere Castle and shot!
The ecclectic costume design (read "hip") like this, if not done right comes off as cheap and amatuerish looking. These were not done right. The set was an overdone mess and pretty much destroyed any aspect of what makes shows at the Delecorte wonderful, the open air setting. This set was a monster, making the wonderful Delacorte seem claustrophobic and lacking any air. It seemed to eat entire scenes and not is a good way.

Um what about the Sam Mendes production of Cabaret?
(And he did most of the work at the Donmar so don't attribute the show's success to his co-director)

Um what about the 1999 revival of Kiss Me Kate directed by Michael Blakemore?
(yes he was born in Australia but he trained at RADA and his entire career took place in Britain prior to his New York gigs)

Posted: 7/28/12 at 3:43pmTrevor Nunn's Oklahoma! seemed to go quite well too

Posted: 7/28/12 at 3:50pmUm, quite a lot of people liked the revival of La Cage directed by Terry Johnson far more than Jerry Zaks' failed attempt.

Posted: 7/28/12 at 3:52pmUm, I think the revival of Sunday in the Park with George directed by Sam Buntrock was the toast of Broadway.

I think it was generally agreed that American directors really messed up recent Broadway revivals of Little Shop of Horrors, On a Clear Day, Guys & Dolls, Annie, West Side Story etc etc.
So basically these comments about British directors are just jingoistic nonsense. Would you tolerate generalised comments about black directors?

Gotta admit, I don't get this sweeping generalization about British directors either, PJ. Pretty snobbish.

Posted: 7/28/12 at 5:08pmEspecially considering American-helmed revivals don't exactly have a great batting average lately.

Posted: 7/28/12 at 5:50pmNunn's OKLAHOMA! took all the joy out of a classic. Terry Johnson's LA CAGE was awful. Just my opinion though. I did enjoy Buntrock's SUNDAY... a lot though.

Personally, I thought Nunn's "Oklahoma!" was terrific. It was a great blend of whimsy and gravity.
I'm really tired of cheese-ball productions with everyone grinning insanely and having no clue about where the show is set and what is going on.
And Hytner's Carousel was a masterpiece.

I liked both Nunn's Oklahoma! and Johnson's La Cage Aux Folles.

The first thing I thought of when I read this was Roundabout's Bye Bye Birdie.

Posted: 7/28/12 at 6:17pmI liked Sam Mendes/ Rob Marshall production of Cabaret as well. I also liked his production of Gypsy (although I know many people didn't). There are also other British directors whose work I've enjoyed. Like others said, revivals helmed by American directors have struck out too, so it seems a little much to paint all British directors with such a wide stroke.

Alright, FINE. British directors are okay. They just tend to make everything a half hour a longer and paint all the sets brown.
best12, I agree with your comment about "cheese-ball" productions and all that. I've just found many British-directed revivals rather joyless, with a few exceptions.

They are hoping to give us all a woody?

If only more productions were somewhere in between.

Well, a lot of Encores! productions are in-between. But do they really count? They're technically concerts.
The RAGTIME revival was in-between.
Anything with the names Kathleen Marshall or Rob Ashford attached, though: sadly not.
