Riedel: ‘Into’ is lost in the woods

I can't help but notice that when Riedel goes after a show like SPIDERMAN or LEAP OF FAITH, which are both far from popular on the boards, no one really seems to take issue with it. (In fact, I've seen many people defend him and his sources and reliability when he writes articles about generally reviled shows.) But when he targets a beloved show like INTO THE WOODS, everyone is up in arms.
Just an observation...

Okay, MANY people do it.
Better?
If it's something I've noticed, clearly it's not one or two people who are doing it.

I don't think two pages of posts where only 1/3 of them are even about Riedel and his article constitutes "everyone is up in arms" or even "the majority".
just an observation

Posted: 7/27/12 at 3:23pmInto the Woods stopped being sacrosanct at the last revival which received a great deal of harsh criticism from fans of the show, so I don't think the show itself is the issue here.

Disagreeing and being snarky seem to go hand in hand on BWW. Glad to see things have not changed a bit on these boards since I joined!
And if you read my post, I said "beloved shows like ITW." I am referring to this thread, yes, but also to other threads in the past regarding shows that have massive followings that Riedel has taken a dump on. MANY PEOPLE seem to take issue with his reliability and sources when its regarding a show that they like. But when he's going after a generally disliked show, it's quite the opposite.
And this is coming from someone who is a huge ITW fan and can't wait to see this show. I have no insider knowledge about the production and barely any insight into how the run is going or what its future holds. I wish it the best. I was just making an observation about the general reaction to his articles. Disagree away, but I hardly think I'm pulling this out of my ass...

Can someone explain the costumes and wigs seen in these photos? Is there an overall period concept connected to this production, or did they just decide on a "creative look" with no known reason behind it?
Just based on the few photos I've seen, it looks a bit like "Our Town" staged in an insane asylum.

I think Stephen Daldry and John Tiffany have given us a couple of entertaining musicals within the last couple years.
My proposed law was banning British directors from directing "American" musicals. That would not include Billy Elliot or Once.
Yeah piss off, Nick Hytner, and take your Carousel with you.
I'll concede you that. I believe that Carousel was the ONLY American musical in history to be well directed by a British director. Every other one was butchered.

Ditto. Can't stand the little weasel.

WR, You can make your MANY PEOPLE font as big and bold as you want. But your other post originally said "THE MAJORITY." You later edited it to read "MANY" after I commented, without indicating you had edited. Just to keep points clear.

Posted: 7/27/12 at 3:35pmI know that every time Rediel comes up, some people bitch and some people defend him, so same as it ever was. I don't think it's some kind pro-Woods or pro-Sonheim Cabal behind the scenes.

@artscallion, I changed it from "the majority" to "many" before I read your post. I guess you're looking over my shoulder and know exactly when and why I switched the wording. Maybe I should pull my blinds....

WICKEDROCKS, , It's a valid observation but hardly a new one. It has come up very often when Reifel attacks or praises. If your point is that there are two-faced people on the boards, that's hardly news either.
Bestie, I did a blow by blow of most of the costumes on the other thread. There seems to be no rhyme or reason, no theme, or specific style or time period.
I would quess they feel it's a universal thing, but that's BS and does not work. The costumes are a real let down and don't help the production at all IMO.

"Ugh. Can't Mayor Bloomberg pass a law or something, making it illegal to hire anyone British, "hotshot" or not, to direct American musicals?"
Dear PalJoey. F**k you.

Agree about British directors, PalJoey (and on Hytner's pardon-for me, he has always been the exception to the British rule).
To quote Frank Rich "Even in the age of Andrew Lloyd Webber, the British remain in awe of the Broadway Musical."
