Boy Webber can write a show, but clueless in pulling a show together.
He can write a melody, but he always saddles himself with the world's worst lyricists. Beyond that, as frontrowcenter said, the structure of most of his shows are horrendous.
As for Love Never Dies, does anyone over here really care to see this sequel? Can't they just let it die? O'Brien and Mitchell's considerable talents would be MUCH BETTER served allowing them to get back to work on Catch Me If You Can. I'm sure they can't wait to be done with Lord Webber.
newintown -- love it.
ThankstoPhantom -- that's very well put.
B3TA07 (spoiler alert!) -- according to the new show, she's supposed to have gone back and slept with the Phantom the night before her wedding to Raoul.

Aww come on, surely you can give him "Cats"?
Why? For me the show has great tunes, and wonderful spectacle but no real structure. The first half hour is enchanting, but it never goes anywhere and by the end it becomes a complete bore.
Cast albums are NOT "soundtracks."
Live theatre does not use a "soundtrack." If it did, it wouldn't be live theatre!
I host a weekly one-hour radio program featuring cast album selections as well as songs by cabaret, jazz and theatre artists. The program, FRONT ROW CENTRE is heard Sundays 9 to 10 am and also Saturdays from 8 to 9 am (eastern times) on www.proudfm.com

Just figure out how to italicize.
Here's one change ALW needs to make: Cut the character of Meg altogether. Meg as the villain just doesn't work. So cut her and add Carlotta. That diva has a bone to pick with both the Phantom and Christine (one killed her husband, the other stole her job), and I'm sure she'd travel to New York to get her revenge.

WTF? That is hilarious. Gone back to where? The phantom disappeared, no one knew where he was...
PARTIAL SPOILER
And how could Christine go back to him, when Madame Giry explains how she shielded the Phantom and whisked him away, moved him out of Paris and moved to NY all immediately after the murders in Phantom 1

Because ALW is a fcking idiot...
Where (or when) does Giry explain about shielding the Phantom and whisking him away from paris immediately after the murders in Phantom 1 ?
in act one. when giry sees that phantom still has thing for christine.
I don't remember it being "immediately"
Found it.
Act I, Scene 2, the AERIE
She doesn't say "immediately." She just recounts the series of events in which she helped him escape.
This is from the libretto that comes with the deluxe CD set. They might have changed it on stage, but I don't see why they would have.
I think it is still questionable that Christine would have looked him up wherever he was hiding, but it is not impossible.

Totally OT, but who is that gorgeous man in your avatar theatrefan4???

Nolan Gerard Funk.
Wouldn't a Sunset Boulevard sequel have been so much more interesting? Norma in the loony bin. Max trying to break her out. Betty trying to get Blind Windows produced. Norma trying to stop it. It seems so much more obvious. Is it just me?

And for some reason Joe narrates it? I would love to see that, even if it is just another showpeice for the actress playing Norma.
How about a sequel to Cats? I don't know...
If Sunset Boulevard had run for 25 years, then it would make sense. I mean, make the amount of sense that a Phantom sequel makes. Which is still to say, very little.

LNd rewrites history to say that Christine didn't get with Erik because he wasn't hot, not because he was a psycho who threatened to kill the man she loved if she didn't marry him.
Don't get me started, ugh.

How much can they change when they've already released the vocal selections?
"How much can they change when they've already released the vocal selections?"
There are two very different vocal selections for Martin Guerre. Just saying
I think it's stupid to have Raoul be outright abusive when he clearly loves Christine enough to risk all for her. "I did it all for you and all for nothing".
Oh, but they are quick to explain that a LOT can happen in ten years.
There is no reason to believe that it is this LOT, the way the characters have become in LND, but undeniably, a LOT has happened.
--Besides, if Raoul is not made to look like a real loser in LND, then Christine has to choose between a faithful and loving husband and manipulator who doesn't mind stealing another man's wife---but a manipulator she has a passion for.
LND's Phantom is a "kinder gentler" Phantom. They want him to look like a star crossed lover, not a Jerry Springer guy.

And therein lies the main problem.

Webber and Really Useful just can't manage shows or produce - they are useless - mainly because Webber is so flipent.
Joseph and Sound of Music were only success because of TV and Cameron would never let him or the company take control of Phantoms general management as he knows how terribly it is. Webbers shows before Sunset were successes because they had a different producer who controlled everything.
It all started with Sunset when webber decided he wanted all the money himself - and look what happened there! Then it went from bad to worse with Whistle, Beautiful Game and Woman in White being massive distasters. Even the Evita revival was badly put together. Webber has lost a fortune and if it wasnt for this theatres bringing in money (even tho he had to sell 5) and his other 80s show bringing in the money - he'd be broke.
Lover Never Dies isn't doing too well in London. Lots of unsold tickets (ticket sellers who bought up tickets are loosing money) and the marketing is awful - just look at the design! Looks like a low budget horror film from the 70s! They are still making changes to the show - which is never a good sign at this stage.
I doubt it will be ready for Broadway in Nov, if they risk it and do open it, it will be very 50/50 on success...and if it doesnt open in Autumn, lord knows where you guys will get it ... Wizard of Oz is set to open at the Palladium in Feb 2011 and Webber is in talks to do another BBC show next year for either Jesus Christ Superstar or West Side Story revival...which will open end of 2011... so he is pretty booked solid and wont give up TV as its bringing in a lot of money, money he needs.
