I find it interesting where, in a year that will be just like MORMON or PRODUCERS, where people are going to vote HAMILTON right down the line, that people don't think Lin will even get a nomination. I mean, I'm pretty sure his name is already engraved on the Best Actor award.

"Don't forget the Tony rules now allow for additional nominees if there are nominating voting ties."
I actually think there is a strong chance this could happen for the women this year. I have now seen Shuffle Along, Waitress, Bright Star, Color Purple, Hamilton and She Loves Me, and I think each of the six women leading those shows HAS to be nominated. I also am just hoping there is a tie, as I think the first of the women to be shut out would be Carmen Cusack, whose performance moved me more than any other this season.

I agree that we may see 6 women nominated for leading actress in a musical. Which would be awesome.

This is the strongest Best Actress roster in recent memory. Benanti, Mueller, McDonald, Errivo, Soo, Cusack, Villafane.
Of those, I would say the first four are locks, Soo is very likely, and Cusack and Villafane could each easily be spoilers in a sixth slot.
The rules could even allow for all 7 to be nominated in the case of a three-way tie.

I agree. People are really underestimating Lin in the Best Actor category.

That would be wonderful. This season truly has been filled with an embarrassment of riches.

Miranda will rightfully get in. He gives a star performance in HAMILTON while seamlessly blending in with the ensemble, and people truly underestimate the talent necessary to rap the way he does. He also brings an electrifying energy to the proceedings and--something no one talks about--an unexpected vulnerability (similar to what he did in his underrated performance in IN THE HEIGHTS) that is key to making the audience become invested in the journey of a character that could easily be annoyingly self-righteous in the hands of a lesser performer. Miranda is an old-fashioned Broadway showman at heart, and in HAMILTON he created the perfect vehicle to show those skills. He'll be nominated and while I'm rooting for Leslie Odom Jr., I'd be very happy if he wins.

Odom will be nominated as Supporting Actor, I'd imagine. I can't see why he'd be in the Leading Actor category.

It's been determined that he is indeed leading.

Really?! How odd. Did they petition for that?

Hamilton's case is odd. Philippa Soo is not a "leading actress" in it for example in my opinion. She's in it less then Daveed Diggs for example who was (rightfully) put in supporting. And I can understand why they put Leslie in lead but one can make a strong argument for supporting with him.

He appears for the bulk of the show and while he's not the title character, his is the arc that mirrors Hamilton's the most. Since from the beginning we know where Hamilton's story ends, I found Burr's to be more tragic and he (to me at least) has more resonance in his failure.
I would say it's similar to Terrence Mann being nominated as Lead for Les Miserables. Some would call him featured (Russell Crowe was pushed for supporting in the Oscar race) but his arc is the mirror to the primary lead's.

Given the Les Miz example, I'd say Javert and Valjean are the two leads of Les Miz.
If the girl from On Your Feet gets nominated over Cusack, I will be incredibly disappointed. Cusack, to me, gave the best performance by a leading lady this season. The ladies in She Loves Me are great, no doubt, but Cusack holds that show together, belts to the rafters, and gives me a full emotional journey 8x a week.

It's not about stage time. Pippa doesn't have a ton of stage time but she is CLEARLY the female lead.
And I don't know if they petitioned Leslie for Lead or if the committee did that on their own, but he is indeed Lead. Updated On: 4/27/16 at 01:39 PM

Agreed regarding Soo and her role.
The HAMILTON producers had to petition Soo, Odom, and Miranda for Leading as they are all below the title.

1000% Agree! Hit it right on the nail! I don't undestand why Riedel thinks Vilafane is a lock?

With Odom, I Imagine the producers didn't want to overcrowd the Supporting category too much, since Diggs, Groff, and Jackson are already pretty safe bets for a nomination.

Javert is a supporting character. Nearly every time he's on stage, he's there because of how his character relates or connects with Valjean, but the reverse is not true. That's the definition of supporting.

I third that! Carmen Cusack definitely deserves a nod over Villafane. Her performance is so emotional and nuanced and I agree that she holds the show together.

Not to discredit Ana Villafane's performance, which is lovely, but I really see no feasible way she earns a nomination. She hasn't received nearly the same upswell of praise and attention over her performance as Carmen Cusack, the only woman who could, in my opinion, cause the category to be expanded to six.

Although Phillipa may have slightly less stage time than Daveed, her character arc is much more important and integral to the story. Aside from What'd I Miss, Daveed doesn't have a big standout acting moment (not because of his performance, but because the libretto doesn't allow for it). Phillipa has Helpless, Burn, Stay Alive (Reprise), It's Quiet Uptown, WLWDWTYS etc.
It would have been ridiculous to put her in supporting with Renee who has much less to do than her.

Agree with your reasoning for Philippa being in Lead. While Daveed certainly belongs in the featured category, he also has his epic rap in "Guns and Ships" as well as great acting moments in the two Cabinet Battles and "Washington on Your Side" to justify a nomination (and possible win).

Oh don't get me wrong, I want Daveed to win, I just think his is a featured role due to the lack of big moments in comparison to Lin, Leslie, Phillipa. He does give a consistently great performance and does the best with what he is given.
