Riedel on Tony performances.....

"The producers of “Spider-Man, Turn Off the Dark,” no doubt nervous about their weakening box office, have decided to end their boycott of the Tony Awards and allow their star, Reeve Carney, to perform."

Why did the producers boycott the Tony Awards?

Sigh. I miss the classy hostess with the mostest, Angela Lansbury. Neil camping it up promises cringes.

I miss when only the nominated shows performed.
I know you. I know you. I know you.

Riedel on Tony performances.....

They are just doing the opening. Not individual performances . It'll be a big, broadway splashy opening. Kind of how Rosie used to do I imagine.

It'll always be a mess. I'm sure it will be an original song with the characters all used?

They're on the right track. Now all they need to do is cut the awards. Make it an annual "Best of Broadway" special featuring every show in town and making Broadway look like the most exciting place in the universe. Drag out all the stars, past and present. Hugh can do "I Am Not the Boy Next Door," Liza can do whatever, Radcliffe can do "I Believe in You" in addition to numbers from all the currently-running shows. Move the awards back to the Waldorf as a big dinner party. The acceptance speeches can go on for as long as the winners like, no commercials to contend with, the design nominees won't be treated like 2nd class citizens, and if NY1 wants to cover it, great. It would be a much better "commercial" for Broadway (no one in Little Rock cares who wins Featured Actor in a Musical because they don't know who those people are) and a more enjoyable industry event for those involved in the Tony's.

I love when every show gets a moment- Even if they just run a montage of each show's marquee and a glimpse of curtain call.

Riedel on Tony performances.....

The 2011 performance that Spider-Man gave was just for marketing purposes. They were not eligible for contention that year. When they were nominated for two(?) awards last year, the bitter producers refused to be a part of the ceremony, and instead offered free Spidey tickets to anybody named Tony (or any variation of the name) on Tony night, so that they could have the most Tony's in town.

(Somebody correct me if I'm wrong?)
