IT IS NOT NEWS!!!!!!!!!!
It is speculation that a certain show may close! It's not exactly brain science!

Posted: 6/28/06 at 1:02pmI heard from the firm that represents the show and they stated that the story about "Hairspray" closing is not true and that it will be around for a long time to come. That is great news!

Riedel did not say that HAIRSPRAY was closing.
You guys really need a reality check. My blood pressure is getting higher by the second.

"Riedel did not say that HAIRSPRAY was closing.".
He said it MAY close by the end of the year. Either way, it is not true so everyone can relax and go about their other business.

Munkustrap, your levelheadedness makes me laugh. This is not a place for your kind. This is only for unstable theatre crazies!

No one knows if it's true or not.
The firm should have said "There are no PLANS to close HAIRSPRAY."
Closings generally aren't planned 6 months in advance.

"Closings generally aren't planned 6 months in advance."
OK. So lets start speculating that "Phantom" or "Rent" another show will close by the end of the year. They have had far worse weeks in the past than "Hairspray" has.
"No one knows if it's true or not."
The person who represents the show said tickets are selling well into the future. I would tend to believe he would have a clue as to what the advance for the show is and if it was or was not going to close to make way for "Evita". If it turns out he is wrong and Riedel is right, I'll be the first to say I was mistaken but until then, long live "Hairspray"!

There's only one civilized way to solve this:
Mud wrestling competition in Shubert Alley between Margo Lion and Andrew Lloyd Webber. Winner gets the Simon.
And I agree with munk.

Don't get me wrong - I think HAIRSPRAY is fantastic - I adore the show, and I don't wish it to go anywhere.
I just think it's very naive to say "Nope! Definitely not closing!" Of course it will close eventually - we don't know when.
It would be just as fair to speculate when PHANTOM and RENT will close. I don't see either of them closing by the end of the year, but it's theatre - anything is possible.

Yes, that would be brlliant, FOA. (The TARZAN thing...)
I would like to see Haylie Duff in a fight with Lloyd Webber. I'd love to see that horse face get her teeth knocked out.

Munk, that's not nice to say about Webber.

One show can not make another show close just because they want the theatre they are in, right?
Ehhhh. Didn't that happen with Gypsy and Chicago?
Didn't the Gypsy producers basically kick Chicago out of the Shubert? But since Chicago was getting a lot of success from the movie, the Weisslers moved it to the smaller Ambassador (which was a smart move)
And well.. we all know how that Gypsy reival turned out, so that probally wasn't the best choice to demand the Shubert. Chicago is 10 years running, and still strong.

Just because a show moved for another doesn't mean it got kicked out - it was probably a mutual decision.
As always, the Nederlanders or the Shuberts have total control over what shows are playing in their theatres.

Pretty much, ljay.
But seeing BP belt out Rose's Turn in that glorious theatre was enough for me.
It would be one thing if they made CHICAGO close. All it did was move theatres, bringing success to the Ambassador which had been deemed cursed due to the string of flops it housed. Plus, it was a smart business move for the show since it had less seats to sell.

Posted: 6/28/06 at 1:49pmDefinitely agree that it was smart business for Chicago. But not so much for Gypsy.

I certainly dont feel as if Hairspray is going anywhere by the end of the year, its doing good business and has some interesting casting lined up. I think it would be a poor business choice to close it before the movie comes out, especially with the Vegas and Equity tours recently ending, it would just speak poorly for the movie to reflect a show that recently had 3 mountings close.
That said I wouldnt take anything said by the firm that represents Hairspray too seriously.
What I mean is, he wouldnt be doing his job well if he said yep, the show is doing horribly and we plan to close it. How often do we hear that a cast was recently reassured a show would stay open a week before they actually close? And if the cast hardly ever knows in advance, you just dont leak that kind of thing to random people who call for info. when theyre good and ready, thats what closing notices are for.

Posted: 6/28/06 at 1:51pmThe day that Hairspray closes will be a sad day on Broadway. Hopefully, that day won't come anytime soon. Hairspray is a nice escape from some other, less than flattering musicals. I'm sure we all know which ones I'm talking about.
