I recently listened to an interview with Nina Arianda, who says that she does sing, she just hasn't in awhile. Doesn't say if she has a good voice or not, but she seemed pretty confident.

"If this is going to be a Christian nation that doesn't help the poor, either we have to pretend that Jesus was just as selfish as we are, or we've got to acknowledge that He commanded us to love the poor and serve the needy without condition and then admit that we just don't want to do it." -Stephen Colbert

She said she wouldn't call herself a singer, but she can sing, which makes me imagine she'd be somewhere along the lines of a Joanna Gleason.

That's what I was thinking, givesmevoice. I'd love for Lauren Ambrose to get the chance to play the role, but Arianda would be equally wonderful, IMO. Arianda and Murphy on stage together would be simply electric!

On a somewhat related note, does anyone else think Arianda and Murphy look similar?

I've always thought so, broadwaybaby, maybe that's why I like Arianda so much (well, that and the fact she's hugely talented).

They've both acknowledged their resemblance - and even played mother and daughter in Vera Farmiga's film "Higher Ground"! They do look a lot alike.

and just my two cents...I would KILL to have Donna Murphy as the Witch. Will be at that theater every single day. Riedel: The Public already wants to bring WOODS to Broadway...

Arianda went to Tisch for graduate school, the program trains actors to be competent singers.

I see her as making a wonderful Baker's Wife.

I had never even thought of Arianda for The Baker's Wife (my heart is set on Kate Baldwin), but she would be fantastic.

I adore both ladies, but isn't Arianda a bit young for the role? I always see the Baker's Wife as being older (mid to late 30s).

Sondheim says that Streep would make a great Witch. He also doesn't deny that she's being considered/in talks.

having seen the video of this production in regent's park, i can easily picture meryl as the witch. she would be fantastic. she may be a little old, but with a great costume and wig, she'll look wonderful. think patti lupone's boobage in women on the verge.

I don't know if people around here think Fergie isn't 'beautiful' enough to potray youth and beauty, i'm afraid the audience would be howling at Streep. Twenty years ago YES YES YES. Now though.... let's give it to someone else.

When is Streep going to have time to do this? She has about twenty films in her schedule. If they in fact want to move it to Broadway, she likely won't be available for the transfer. Just thinking in terms of practicality here.

I would personally prefer the show be an ensemble piece as it was meant to be.
