At this point I'm more intrigued about MB's little hint.

Very interesting idea, but what ever you do Rob you must use Dion Bebbe again for your cinematography. It's got to look good and i feel he can deliver.

Although Krakowski is would be a sure bet for theatre fans, i think she's not big enough for the movie.

They should keep Banderas. I'm sure Marshall will fight for him.

I can already see Madge wetting her lips and hoping for a musical reunion with Banderas.

What role would Madonna be good for? Luisa or Carla?

I think Madonna could pull off Carla. I'd love to see Penelope Cruz as Claudia. Nicole Kidman maybe as Luisa?

Yeah, I was all about NINE until I read MB's post...oh well, three more weeks then.
Meanwhile, I couldn't be more excited about this news. NINE is definitely my favorite non-Sondheim show, the score is fantastic and it gives each character their chance to show off.
Krakowski would make a great Carla on film but she'll never be cast in this movie, Banderas is the most appropriate choice for Guido but I believe if they already decided to go on with the film they must've approached a few A-list actors here and there. I'd love to see Penelope Cruz as Claudia but she was dubbed in VOLVER (or so I thought) so I assume she can't sing.
I'm so excited about this movie.

Cruz was dubbed in VOLVER but it actually wasn't a choice based on her own singing but rather a cinematic device Almadovar has used in a few films.

She actually has sung in other movies.

This is a good idea. A very good idea.

It has great cinematic potential - but as everyone else has pointed out - the real question is "WHO WILL BE GUIDO!?"

I can see Bandares doing it. But let's assume he doesn't get it...who else has the name power for it?

John Travolta? Hugh Jackman (though his schedule is pretty locked)? Gael García Bernal(Y Tu Mama Tambien & MOtorcycle Diaries) is too young otherwise this role would rock with him.

And the list of women who will test for this will be huge. Madonna, Nicole Kidman, Idina Menzel, Melanie Griffith, Julia Roberts, Catherine Zeta Jones, Sophia Lorren, Heather Grahm, Demi Moore, Eva Longoria all could provide the combination of talent and sex that raises the film's profile. And it will be the women who do this if they don't get an A list star for Guido.

I actually think it will be first offered to Hugh Jackman - as is every musical project these days.

Well Bandaras isn't Italian either. Frankly there are no Italian Hunk movie stars to offer it to at the moment.

Is this really a good idea? 81/2 a lot of people consider one of the greatest films in the history of filmaking with also one of the greatest scores written for a movie. I did see Nine on b'way with antonio and even though I did enjoy the production. I didn't care for the actual show. It was no where nears that art that 8 1/2 is.
Of course then again, The Producers was one of the funniest films ever made and that re-make was pretty dreadful. I do think Rob Marshall is very talented, and I personally don't think Memoirs of a Geisha was his fault. It was still a gorgeous looking film, as was chicago and as nine I'm sure will be

But some latino men can pass for italian, and vice versa.

I just don't think Jackman would work.

I've heard that Jonathan Pryce was a good Guido and he's not Italian or Latino...but I agree, I don't think Jackman would work.

I guarantee that you will see Catherine Zeta Jones cast in this movie. They are going to go with bigger names than Jane Krakowski and Mary Stuart Masterson.

I would love Sophia Loren in this film! What a great idea.

Just a thought, Krakowski may be too busy with 30 Rock and her possible reprisal of Miss Adelaide in Guys and Dolls for which she won an Olivier Award in London in the mounting revival of the Broadway revival that's due...sometime. Though I doubt that's hardly enough to stop her from being in the movie, it may be an excuse that her agent may state if need be.

Gael is ten years too young- but yes, he would be awesome. However, I've never heard him sing. so yeh. :)

Ugh, I'd hate to see Gael Garcia Bernal as Guido (actually I don't get Bernal at all, and yes I've seen Y TU MAMA TAMBIEN, MALA EDUCACION, BABEL, et al).
I'd have loved to see Raul Julia play the role in a film back in the 80s when he was alive. Oh well. Now, I like Hugh Jackman but he is completely wrong for Guido, IMO.
I'd love to see someone like Banderas, Clive Owen, or Andy Garcia.
MichaelBennett, thanks for the insight on Cruz' singing. I think she'd be perfect as Claudia. How about Salma Hayek as Carla?

Hrmm I'm not sure what to think. On one hand I think it's a GREAT choice but being a huge fan of 8 1/2 I have to admit the idea of making a *film* base don it (as opposed to a new medium like a stagework) rubs me kinda the wrong way. But I'll get over that.

I'm NOT a Yeston fan by any means but this is his one score I really love... I have to admit I'm one of the very few on here who's not sure if Marshall is up to the material--he makes gorgeous films but IMHO Chicago (which I did really liek don't get me wrong) and Geisha (which I actually thought was underated--people acted like the book was some literary masterpiece given shortchange when reallyit's more a fun read full of misinformation and cliches that was givena pretty and sometimes even moving adaptation)--but I dont' thinK marshall is brilliant. His films seem filled with images IMHO with no real meaning behind the flash--At all, they're empty.

That aid Tommy Tune also I think is great at images and productions without any real substance and from all I've read and seen he proved to be an amazing fit with Nine (the revival seems to havesuffered largely in comparisons) so maybe this fit will also be brilliant

Ooh, I like the idea of Clive Owen as Guido. I could see him in the role. I wonder if he sings?

Yeah, Clive Owen would anchor the movie perfectly. If you look at pictures of Marcello Mastroianni, who played Guido in 8 1/2, someone like Owen fits the look that Fellini had in mind.

I think Owen is commanding, extremely sexy, and yet very vulnerable when he needs to be, also I could see why every girl in Venice would want to be with this Casanova. I'd love to see him play the role but I don't know if he can sing. Then again, remember Raul Julia couldn't really sing the score the way it was written (particularly those notes during "The Bells of St. Sebastian") and everyone from Tommy Tune to Ken Mandelbaum agrees no one has played the role as effectively as he did.
I really think Chita is a legend and a fascinating dancer but she needs to stay 50 feet away from this project.
