This idea frightens me so badly I might have to hide under my desk until it all passes.
I love Nine. And I just... this just doesn't seem like a good idea to me. I really hope I'm wrong but... I don't know.

God in heaven, what a terrible idea. A catastrophe in the making. The worst director in America (tied with the poisonous Joel Schumacher) directing one of the lamest musicals ever.
At least Rob Marshall won't be destroying a good musical with his own brand of cinematic ineptitude. Fellini is rolling over in his grave.

Yay! Now I need to get the CD. I love what I've seen of the Tony Performances though. EEE! I love the musicals of the 80's! And Musical Movies! I'm hyperventalating!
I do hope they get Antonio. If they do get him, wouldn't it be the first time someone from a revival reprised their role in a film version?
Ok, now they just need to get started on that stop motion Into the Woods, La Cage Aux Folles, Edwin Drood . . .

Well I do have to say, that despite not knowing that Marshall is the right choice for the material, I do feel that the more "unrealistic" the source material - the easier it is to make an exciting cinematic adaptation.
Because it is so unconventional - NINE should immediately dodge some of the problems that faced film versions RENT, PHANTOM and even DREAMGIRLS of trying to make a musical work in a "realistic" setting.
P.S. I'm directing EDWIN DROOD at the moment - it would make the worst movie musical ever.

Posted: 4/12/07 at 4:46pmI really wish they would put The Germans at the Spa back into the show. It's a great number, and very Fellini-esque. I always loved Fellini's use of layering peripheral characters, who may not ever be clearly identified, but very meticulously defined in style and voice, to create a fully realized setting.

Posted: 4/12/07 at 4:51pmWhile I'm not completely familiar with every aspect of Nine, the music I heard from it was great and I'm looking forward to seeing this. My only concern is that this movie will be prey to casting of big name celebrities with no theatre people involved. I hope Antonio Banderas and Jane Krakowski are involved. Is the role of Lady of the Spa like a small feautred part, because if so do you think Deidre Goodwin could reprise the role from Broadway? It wouldn't be the first time she was in a musical movie (she played June in Chicago) and she has a lot of talent! If the role is small enough, I really don't see the need to cast it a movie actress, which is why I'm curious.

This COULD be great. I think Marshall may be right choice.
I think the score is brilliant. If some people are getting this upset over NINE becoming a musical movie, I don't want to see the reaction if FOLLIES really become a musical movie.

With the cinematically retarded Marshall at the helm, it could have the greatest cast ever and still suck. And with the hopelessly inept Marshall at the helm, we can rest assured that only the least able people will be cast. Never forget, this is the man who gave Richard Gere the chance to prove that he has no business in musicals.
This is going to SUCK big time.

"why? just why?"
Because Weinstein and Marshall understood that Chicago broke through to a larger non musical loving audience because it was sexy, funny and sharp.
Nine fits the same mold. A modern Casanova, with a bevy of hot women will connect to, let's say, the larger movie going public.
I can see A Call to the Vatican being half the trailer. They know what they're doing.

I think Nine is a brilliant film choice that, as has been said, structurally can avoid problems plaguing other movie-musicals. I think that he can really come through with a crisp new rendering of a great score. Plus, if Germans at the Spa is not used, it would only double my excitement to see this.
And I think this is a MUCH better cinematic fare than Follies ever would be. With the right casting, this can garner much appeal.

Interesting, very interesting. I got this CD at Christmas, primarily because of the interest it always stirs up here. I wasn't disappointed either, it gets played a lot

Stamos for Guido!
Seriously though, I'm excited to see how this will turn out. I think it has potential to translate well to film using a format similar to Chicago.

Posted: 4/12/07 at 4:59pmI am not sure if I like the idea. I loved the musical so much and as a fan of Mary Stuart Masterson (I maintain www.mary-stuart-masterson.com) I really doubt that she will be in it.

I imagine they will use Banderas.
I truly hope they keep Benanti. Its a small enough role, and her name is growing in film.

I totally have the movie version of this show written in my head.
Roscoe, are you on crack? In fact, are you EnchantedHunter in disguise?
I love Chicago and I actually thought that Memoirs of a Geisha was the complete opposite of what the critics said, even if I did think that the training sequence was like an instruction video in Geisha Training 101.

Whoever suggested Almodovar direct this... WOW. what a fantastic idea.
i'm still excited to see one of my favorite musicals of all time being put on the big screen and I really hope they don't shortchange it. Love the revival cast as I do, don't keep 'em.
