I don't know how I feel about this as a movie... but seriously, the thought of Ewan McGregor as Dan just gave me goosebumps.
I love Kate Winslet.. but can she sing? Toni Collette would be brilliant. I don't think Paltrow can act it.
Keep Lea Michele far away from this, please.

I LOVE the idea as Zach Braff as the Doctors. He has a bit of a resemblance to Louis and he's a big fan of musical theatre. Audiences would probably embrace him more because he's played a doctor on Scrubs for like what, 10 years?
I also love the ideas of Mark Salling as Gabe and Darren Criss as Henry. Bring on N2N the movie!!!

I honestly think Toni Collette as Diana would be perfection. She really does have the voice for it and I think Little Miss Sunshine and United States of Tara raised her profile enough to justify some box office draw. Especially if she were paired with Ewan McGregor or even Robert Downey Jr.
Otherwise, I'd definitely go with Paltrow and McGregor with possibly Hunter Parrish as Gabe and Dakota Fanning as Natalie. I love Ellen Page, but I think she's getting a little too old to hang onto high school roles.
Please keep Kidman away from this. I do think she's a talented actress, but her botox and lip injections have become too much of a distraction. Despite being a terrible film, I found her unwatchable in Australia.
"Mamma Mia made a boat load of money -- and IF they are going to make a movie musical, THAT'S what they plan to do. And you can trust that many of the roles WILL be names. Not all of them, but enough of them.
The OBC has no box office draw whatsoever. No one has heard of ANY of them."
Aaron Tveit has been on Gossip Girl,He was also in Howl and has made other guest apperences on different T.V shows.with all his fan girls and fan boys I'm pretty sure they'll know who he is.but since were talking about BIG names and BOX OFFICE DRAW here's my list:
Diana:Whitney Houston
Dan:Johnny Depp
Natalie:Christina Aguilera
Gabe:Justin Bieber
Henry:Justin Timberlake
Dr.Fine/Dr.Madden:Seth Rogan & Kanye West
Does this cast list look remotely appetizing to ANY ONE?
Didn't think so.
I can just hear Kanye right now"yo yo Justin Bieber imma let you finish, but I think aaron tveit would make a better gabe." oy
Stunt Casting:Just say no!
I don't see this show as a natural to be translated to film. It would need some MAJOR work/ re-imagining.
As for casting, I'd say Kidman or Winslet are the clear best two choices out there. Kidman could certainly sing it, and Winslet would be terrific.

Count me in as one of the people doubting if this would transition well to film, but I can't resist fantasy casting!
Kate Winslet would be fantastic for Diana if she has the vocal chops. I like the idea of James Marsden as Dan, too.
Could Zachary Levi be young enough to play Gabe? He has a good singing voice, though I'm not sure about his acting range. Otherwise, I'm wondering if Aaron Tveit is enough of a "name" (I mean, he has been on Gossip Girl) to be Gabe. Or is he too old?
I would laugh so hard if Lea started campaigning for Natalie on Glee. That song would be more out of place in the storyline than "Don't Cry for Me, Argentina" was.
"Sarah Hyland is currently 20. I'm curious how that is not old enough to play the high school aged Natalie. She was also in both the Off-Broadway and Broadway runs of Grey Gardens, as well as various workshops, including Bye Bye Birdie and Shrek before she moved to L.A, so I would say singing in and of itself is not a problem. Whether or not her voice is right for the role is another question, of course."
I had no clue she is 20! She seemed to be like, 14 to me. Guess she just plays the part on Modern Family very well :)
If next to normal doesn't get made into a movie, a filmed broadway version would be perfect.
Zach Levi, I think, would be too old to play Gabe. He might be able to play the Doctors though. Also, I'd totally get behind either Hugh Jackman or Ewan McGregor as Dan.
I could see Christian Bale as Dan.
"I could see Christian Bale as Dan."
Oh god....I'm sorry, but I would hate that. I'm not a fan of his at all, and I can only picture him singing the songs in his 'Batman' voice...LOL
So few remember Newsies era Christian Bale?
No, I remember it. I'm just NOT a fan of his at all, either from now or from then.
I wonder what the curtian will look like?

While I don't want Next to Normal to be made into a movie, if it has to happen, Reiner seems like he'd do it justice. I recently saw Flipped, and I thought that was very well done.
I know she's a little too sweet (and young), but maybe Amy Adams? I think she could do the role more similar to how Jessica Phillips did it. She's about the same age as Marsden, and Diana & Dan are supposed to be that age. (By math, Diana/Dan should be no older than 40.)
Also, age-wise, she doesn't fit either role, but I think Scarlett Johansson would work well in the show. Again, she's too old for Natalie and too young for Diana.

Yea, I had also thought of Amy Adams, but I thought of age as well. It is also hard to imagine her pulling off such a powerful role, but if she could I think it would be amazing.
As a fan of Glee, I can not see ANY of them in ANY of the roles. They are too associated with their [Glee] characters at this point in time.

"And why do people automatically assume that a split-screen is the only way to handle a song taking place in multiple locations at once."
If this sentence were punctuated correctly, I thank you for actually having a brain. So many movies show different locations without using a split-screen. Actually, split screens have become very rare because the general consensus seems to be that they're tacky. With the Rent movie, I know many people who justified cutting "Christmas Bells" because "split screens look bad". When the final performance was filmed, did they use split screens? No! Did it work? I think it did. I don't know why so many people jump to the conclusion that split screens will be used.
Awesomedanny,
The stage version of RENT was filmed ONSTAGE everyone in the same room, same area. In a movie they would be in completely separate sets. In next to normal's case it wouldn't work because characters sing certain parts at the same time in different locations. A split screen (in my opinion) would just make the movie so ___________ (insert adjective)
"In the theatre during some sequences you can't be seeing everything all at once due to the natural limitations of the human field of vision. Your eye bounces around the stage. That's why they use lighting and staging techniques during a sequence like that to draw your focus to the person who's most important at the moment."
Yeah, but we're not talking about theatre in general only next to normal, and in the theater (depending where you sit) you can see the entire set and all that's going on.
Toni Collette isn't going to be doing this. Its as many have said too similar to her role on television.
Winslet could definitely sing it.
Paltrow could sing it in different keys than on Broadway but thats fine.
I still wouldn't rule out Ripley recreating her role. If they do this as a small budget Sundance kind of film (think John Cameron Mitchell in HEDWIG) she'd probably be a shoo-in to win awards on the indie festival circuit - and that may be the best way to approach this as a movie. Its not ever going to be commercial even if you had Julia Roberts in it.

Alice talked to Access Hollywood a bit about the movie.

Late to the party but I could TOTALLY get behind Anna Kendrick as Natalie, I think she'd be perfect.
I could also see Darren Criss as a good Henry.
I'm not entirely sure the show would work on film though...there would have to be a LOT of creativity involved in adapting it, but if done well I think it could be effective.
Adam Brody would be fantastic if he could sing. My friend just said Kristen Stewart. How about no? Should a Twilight musical ever come (gag) I could see Jenn as Bella....but Kristen as Natalie...no.
I would love to see Aaron reprise his role. I don't think they need all 6 (or 7 if they used different actors for the doctors) to be huge names.
Of course they'll be different actors playing the doctors.

Since Dr. Fine doesn't sing, he can be played by anyone.
