Diana: Madonna
Dan: Will Smith
Natalie: Lea Michele
Henry: Guy Fieri
Gabe: Josh Groban
"Isn't he a little...vanilla?"
This ain't Ron Howard we are talking about. Misery, Stand By Me, This Is Spinal Tap don't make me think vanilla. Now his most recent works are another story.
Toni Collette would be great as Diana. I think she would bring the right mix of energy for the role.
And I STILL love A FEW GOOD MEN. The only time I've found Tom Cruise even remotely acceptable.
I can't BELIEVE I'm about to make this suggestion...but...
Paltrow.
Paltrow is a damn good actress and has a great voice. I think that's a pretty great idea, personally.
It was my boyfriend's!
I think she could be really rather remarkable. Who for the husband? Patrick Wilson?
Does Dakota Fanning sing well enough for the daughter?
Or am I just casting Children of the Corn, the musical?
I like the Paltrow idea as well. I'm sure I'd have a hard time getting behind whoever they cast as Dan since I love the character so much.
Let's just hope Reiner resists the temptation to cast Lea Michele as Natalie. What do we bet she starts campaigning for that role as well with a rendition of "Superboy and the Invisible Girl" on Glee soon?

Haha! Thanks, aasjb4ever. I try... :)
WAIT.
Ewan McGregor for Dan opposite Paltrow.

"Ewan McGregor for Dan opposite Paltrow."
You may have won me over, RobbieJ
Dakota did her best at Cherie Currie but the role of Natalie does not really seem to be in her range.

Maybe he would be too young, and I haven't seen too many of his films to know his acting chops, but what about James Marsden as Dan? He has a pretty great voice in all I've heard from him.
I wish they would cast the Broadway stars in this but since its gonna go to a big name...
Diana: Michelle Pheiffer (she might be to old though and vocals are questionable)
I WISH Maryl Streep was in the right age bracket, in terms of acting she would knock it out of the ball park and do the singing some justice
Kate Winslet...again vocals might be iffy
And I'm going to catch flack for this...but ef it...its a free country....Idina Menzel...as much as people hate her on this board, she can sing and act...although I dont think she is no where near a "Big name" and her vocals are not right for it...just a thought.
Dan: Hugh Jackman? This depends alot on whoever Diana is...Patric Wilson?
Gabe: Lucas Gabriel (I could see him being great in this role) or maybe make this the "break out" performance for someone
Doctor M: I would like someone older in this...maybe Richard Dreyfuss but he cant sing I think)
Natalie: Watch this one turn out to be some tween poptart...like Taylor Swift, Taylor Momsen, Justin Bieber..you know...the usuals
OOOH afterthought...Minnie Driver? Not exactly a "big name' but if they get a big name Dan they could do it.
Yeah, strummer. Wasn't sure about Fanning as I didn't see The Runaways.
I assume Reiner will be going with a white cast...thought it would be interesting to see it as a black family...or Latino...or Asian.

fingerlakesinger....certainly you didn't just suggest that JUSTIN BIEBER play Natalie?? lol (kidding). I never thought I had anything against Lea Michele but I really hope they don't cast her as Natalie...I just can't see her in the role.
I like the James Marsden idea, too, for Dan. He might be a little young, but Jason Danieley is pretty young. The characters are supposed to be right at 40 anyway.

James Marsden is 37. That's not really too young at all, considering by the time it went through pre-production and all that he would be 38, maybe even 39 depending on how quickly they got it off the ground (assuming it even happens, it is still just on a wish list).
Winslet has been very interested in this piece as a film for a long time...
I think Jason is around that age too...39 or 40? It's not like James Marsden reads overly young.

It'll all depend on how they cast as Gabe if Winslet looks old enough.
I've got to go on a tangent here -- as someone brought up "The Reader". Am I the only person out there who hated her performance in that? I could totally see the wheels of a younger actress turning to make the body of an older woman, instead of just inhabiting it?
Want to talk AMAZING aging? Julianne Moore in the Hours.
I didn't hate her. But I hated that movie.
Who knew the Holocaust could be so boring!?
On topic, I love the Marsden idea.

I'm not sure Paltrow can act it, but she could probably sing it. I love the idea of Toni Collette... though I'm still curious about Nicole Kidman.
I'm actually really intrigued to see if Reiner directs. He does "small suburban family" really well. And I better the naturalistic world will create a nice, new juxtaposition. Should be interesting.
Alice Ripley ROB REINER DO YOU STILL HAVE MY PH#?
IT HASN'T CHANGED. TALK SOON. YES I BELIEVE KATE WINSLET IS AVAILABLE TO PLAY DIANA.
Even Alice Ripley seems to know it's going to be Kate Winslet:
