you didn't offend anyone broadway bound...my sister is rosario dawson's complexion, and my father is usually mistaken for being black even though he was born and raised in Puerto Rico..it happens.
My friend and I have been suggesting Rosario Dawson for Mimi for a while. In fact, I posted her as a suggestion on Yahoo and IMDB months ago, and someone blew my head off.
Has anyone heard her sing besides in Josie? Just wondering what kind of voice she has. She definately looks the part!

Wow, she looks like an older version of a girl in my math class.
I'm *sure* they would make sure she can sing. There's been way too much care put into the casting of this already for them not to check something like that.

"Revolution has set Rosario Dawson to play the female lead role of Mimi Marquez in "Rent," the Christopher Columbus-directed adaptation of the Pulitzer Prize-winning Jonathan Larson musical. "
Oh really?
According to an erinrebecca post about a week ago, "a few different sources have stated that Tracie Thoms has been cast as Joanne."
Well, I told you that I would believe that (and anyone else) when the contracts have been signed."
PAB, I'm missing your point here. Yes, Anthony and a couple of others indicated Tracie Thoms has been offered the role of Joanne. What does that have to do with Rosario Dawson being offered Mimi??

You know, it would great if she got the role. I would not have any problem with that. It's just interesting that when so many people were mentioned for 'Mimi' by people who had such good sources about who the part might go to, my recollection was that NO ONE mentioned Rosario Dawson and now apparently she has signed. If Tracie gets 'Joanne' more power to her. All I was trying to say, in the last thread when you told me that the whole discussion was moot because "according to sources Tracie Thoms had been offered the role", was that I will believe that when she signs the contract.

Well, I'm glad that someone did at some point in time, that's why is said "my recollection was that NO ONE mentioned Rosario Dawson". I joined this board on June 17th and the first time that I've seen her name mentioned was today.

Wow, that news makes me happy. She's a strong actress, very versatile. Don't forget she was recently arrested during the Republican Convention, so she's daring in some respects.

I am all about Rosario playing Mimi. That makes me very happy, although she doesn't look 16. Still. I worked with Rosario on JatP and she was very sweet and hardworking. However, just a note - I'm about 80% sure that Rosario and Tara didn't do their own singing aside from minor back-up stuff with a vocal track behind them - but I didn't talk to them about their vocals, so I don't know for sure. I think it was just some hearsay from the set. I could be wrong though.

Broadway.com is finally reporting Wilson Jermaine Heredia as Angel. I saw year 2001 pictures of him on google.com images. He has definitely aged and looks more handsome than he did in 1996. It should be interesting to see whether his character still identifies himself as 22 if he's cast, because he looks to be no less than 28 (that's him on the right, in 2001). --------------------------- Rosario Dawson Set as Mimi in Rent Film; Heredia Tapped for Angel
Rosario Darson will play Mimi Marquez in the film version of Rent, according to Variety. Broadway.com has also learned that Tony winner Wilson Jermaine Heredia is in talks to play drag queen Angel in the movie, joining previously announced original Broadway cast members Taye Diggs, Jesse L. Martin, Idina Menzel, Adam Pascal and Anthony Rapp. Dawson got her start as one of the teens in Larry Clark's controversial 1995 film Kids, which she landed after being discovered on a Manhattan stoop. She has since appeared in several big budget Hollywood projects, including He Got Game, Light It Up, Sidewalks of New York, Men in Black II, The 25th Hour and Shattered Glass. She will appear in Oliver Stone's upcoming Alexander, to be released November 24. She has never appeared in a full-scale musical, but did sing her own vocals in the film Josie and the Pussycats.
For his work as AIDS-striken drag performance artist Angel in the original cast of Rent, Jeredia earned a Tony Award and Drama Desk Award. He also recreated the part for the 1998 London production of the show, earning a nomination for an Olivier Award. His only New York stage credit since leaving Rent is Eli's Comin', the Laura Nyro musical that played at off-Broadway's Vineyard Theatre in the summer of 2001. In addition, Heredia played drag queen Cha-Cha in the 1999 film Flawless and has appeared on the small screen in Spin City and Law & Order: Special Victims Unit.
Rent, directed by Chris Columbus, is scheduled to begin shooting in San Francisco in early spring 2005. It is tentatively set for release later in the year.

"It does what a musical's supposed to do. It takes you to another world, and it gives you a little tune to carry with you in your head for when you're feeling blue."
Pab, the difference between people saying Tracie had been offered the role and the situation with Mimi is that I don't recall anyone claiming to have sources for who was going to play Mimi. There was speculation about Antonique Smith and also comments about Jaime Lee Kirchner flying out for an audition. Anthony said of the three being considered two had played Mimi but not the third. This would all jive with Rosario being offered the role now. So yeah, don't believe it til 'the contracts are signed' but these two roles were being discussed differently all along.
