The Lion King hasn't been open for 10 years, so "best musical of the past 10 years and best family musical since The Lion King" doesn't make sense. If Rosie says The Lion King was better, then she can't say Mary Poppins is the best musical of the past 10 years.
Reviews have been mixed but they're better than the ones Tarzan got.
Because Tarzan is a good representation of the quality of musicals over the past 10 years.

I just need to say to the people who love the movie (MP) and were disappointed by the stage: Get over it. I know the love and expectation you had, but if it's the same as the movie version, what's the point of staging it?
I haven't yet heard an opinion from a person who loves the original books and not too emotionally attached to the movie about the show. Oh I would love to hear what Ms. P.L. Travers would have thought about the stage version.

MARY POPPINS is a misconceived, unmagical bore and O'Donnell's unintelligent, undiscerning, and, frankly, shill-sounding opinions are without any value whatsoever.

My friend Henry is in it and I'm seeing it on Dec. 9th at a matinee.
It's gotten okay reviews.
It's the first show my parents actually fought over who would have to take me.
My aunt works for Disney so we got good free Disney house seats.

Well, all I will say is that I think it's a shame that she said something nice about a show and the people who probably just don't like her are putting her down for it. Feel how you want about her, but to say that she's stupid for telling people it's a good show is just ridiculous. It all comes down to opinions anyway...
"The Lion King hasn't been open for 10 years, so "best musical of the past 10 years and best family musical since The Lion King" doesn't make sense. If Rosie says The Lion King was better, then she can't say Mary Poppins is the best musical of the past 10 years."
~Completely and totally not true. You're judging two different categories: Best musical of the past ten years, and best family musical. Mary Poppins can be the best FAMILY show since the Lion King, and that only means that the last show, before Poppins, that was decent for families was TLK. Then, to say that it was the best show in the last ten years is a whole different idea, encompassing all shows. Nice try though.
The whole argument is stupid since, as sueleengay wrote, she said "ONE of the best musicals..."
I'm just tired of the Rosie bashing. I'll admit, she's not perfect, but she does a LOT for the theatre community, the gay community, and children/families. When I met her she was nothing but nice, and I would rather form an opinion based on an actual conversation (and yes, it was a conversation, not a passing comment) than on whatever you hear in chat rooms and the news.

Henry as in Henry Hodges?!?!?!?! Dude, you are so lucky!!!!
The closest I've gotten to a Mary Poppins kid is (you guessed it) seeing Katherine Doherty in The Sound of Music at the Company Theatre and meeting her after the show for like two seconds.

Rosie is the best View host in the last ten years.
And what does that say??

Posted: 11/28/06 at 9:05pmWell, we all love Rosie. She's a wonderful friend to the theatre, but I need to disagree with her on this one. Of course, Poppins is a wonderful show. Stiles and Drewe are two of the brightest young songwriters I've heard in a while. (Well, they're not all that young. They've been prominent on the West End for some time.) However, even this season's Grey Gardens is better than Poppins. The Light in the Piazza, Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, Urinetown and of course Ragtime are all better. I'm sorry Rosie, Poppins might be great, but it's not THAT great.

I love Ro. I'm not saying she's being stupid. I'm just saying what not say "Seussical is the best thing since Lion King" and then say "Wicked is the best thing since Seussical" and then "Grey Gardens is the best thing since Wicked" and THEN "Mary Poppins is the best thing since Grey Gardens"
Just a thought

Rosie says that about EVERY show she sees.
Everytime she attends a show, she calls it the BEST thing she's ever seen!
I remember when the revival of CHICAGO opened during the run of her talkshow, and yes...she called it the BEST show she's EVER seen! Then THE LION KING opened -- same song. Then TITANIC opened. Yup, you guessed -- it was the BEST show she's EVER seen in the last 10 years!
When HAIRSPRAY opened AFTER she ended her talk-show...she went on to The Tonight Show to proclaim it THE BEST MUSICAL I'VE EVER SEEN IN THE LAST 10 YEARS! So enthusiastic was she...that she gave out the Original Broadway Cast Recording to the entire Tonight Show audience!

Rosie raved about "The Times That Are a Change-in".
But I still can't wait to see Poppins.

Posted: 11/28/06 at 11:39pmI didn't hear her rave over "The Times That Are a Change-in" but she did have whats his name perform and after it she just went "WWOOOOOOWWW!!! ISN'T HE A CUTIE PATOOTIE!?" Haha. I love Ro. But she calls everyone cutie patootie! She even called me a cutie patootie when I met her after Fiddler! And Harvey F. does the same thing with calling people Cookie. Hahaha. I love them both.

Posted: 11/28/06 at 11:43pmIt's one individual's opinion, not the entire nation's. As one may find this play quite good, others may find it quite different. I personally think Act 1 was quite dry. Act 2 got better. Gavin Lee and Rebeka Luker were the only actors that actually made the emotional connection to the audience (and the ensemble). The sets and the effects were good. It's still much better than Chitty.

I also raved about THE TIMES THEY...
and that was Michael Arden
so misunderstood (the show, not Michael)
back to topic
I like Rosie's enthusiasm about Bway
but Remember the Producers gave "ROSIE"S KIDS"
a huge donation instead of a party for the cast and crew on Opening night (the cast got a dinner)
and THE VIEW audience did not get free tkts to POPPINS,
expect Ashley as a guest host any second now.
Although Rosie didn't mention any cast members

>THE VIEW audience did not get free tkte to POPPINS,
Well MP company will appear on The View in December, so maybe at that time they give out balcony seats? If they block out $20 seats for the audience it's not bad investment on Disney side.

Yeah, she didn't give away tix. Because she said "So Mary Poppins opens on broadway tonight an-" And half the audience cuts her off mid sentence and start going "oooo" and small applauding and she said "No no! You're not getting tickets!" A few laughed "You're getting like my kids, you expect to much!" And everyone laughed. She did give away tix to The Times They are a Changing though.

Except you clearly misunderstood. If it's the best show over the past 10 years and encompassing all shows, then it CANNOT be the best family show SINCE TLK, because by saying "best since" TLK, you're saying that TLK was better. If TLK is better than Mary Poppins, even in the "family show" category, then Mary Poppins CANNOT be the best show overall. It has nothing to do with Rosie bashing, but what she said- and your defense of it- is illogical.

orangeskittles, didn't you say that it hasn't been ten years since TLK has been out? That that was wrong? Either way it's been just over nine years. And if I totally misunderstood what you said, then never mind. :)
