I was watching THE VIEW the other day and Rosie boasted that MARY POPPINS was the best musical on broadway since THE LION KING. And one of the best shows she'd ever seen.
I was surprised to hear that because my wife and I had been anticipating the show... then it came out... and we heard basically nothing about it. I havent seen any critic reviews, etc etc... not much seems to be said about the show.

I can tell you right now. It's amazing. I saw it in London. I loved it. Reviews have been mixed but they're better than the ones Tarzan got. Opinion has been divided too. I have no plans to see it again on Broadway but I recommend you see it.
But my warning: Do not go expecting the movie. It is nothing like the movie. It is more faithful to the books. However, many of the songs from the movie as well as several new ones are in the show.
So see it. But be prepared to see something totally different from (and in my opinion, so much better than) the movie.

Posted: 11/28/06 at 4:40pmI swear I've heard her say this before about other shows. Nothing against her, but she can get a little over-enthusiastic (which is not a bad thing) after she's seen a show.

Well my wife and I had been dying to see the show... I used to love th emovie as a kid, but my wife was obsessed with it as a kid. Julie Andrews was great, the movie was magical... it was just a great movie.
Then we heard all this buzz that the London production was phenomenal. We were excited. As soon as they announced they were bringing it to NYC we agreed we wanted to see it as soon as we could.
But then it opened and... nuthin. Maybe I just havent searched for the reviews enough, but i havent really heard much buzz.
Until Rosie of course.

Posted: 11/28/06 at 4:42pmYes, Rosie does have a habit of speaking only in superlatives. Every guest on her show used to be "the funniest woman alive" or "the cutest patootie in Hollywood" or etc.

I think The Lion King is a BAD show so I can't really say anything about Rosie's opinions....having seen Mary Poppins in London, I must say I was disappointed. It has some great moments, but overall it is lacking.

cubanpab, I'm not StephenSondheimWHOO, but I saw the lion King and I thought it was just okay. the opening scene is fantastic and breathtaking, but after that, everything lacked in comparison. I just didn't hold up to that. I was bored and in some place confused.

Mary Poppins is one of the best musicals in the past 10 years, and the very best of them in my opinion...other than Wicked. Please no bashing

A good friend of mine saw it last week. I was very envious and thought he was going to LOVE it. I spoke with him last night, and, surprisingly, he was very disappointed. He's a big fan of the movie, so maybe that was the reason. But he knew going in that the show was based more on the book than the movie. Still, he said, sets and effects aside, it was a big "who cares?" and "so what?" He said the character of Mary was surprisingly unpleasant and surly and looked like Joan Crawford. He thought a more apt title would have been "Nanny Dearest". He was also completely uninterested in the marital discord sub-plot and found the show overly long and sluggishly paced. Oh well... to each his own. I'd still like to see it eventually. But I’m much less excited about it than I was before it opened to generally luke-warm reviews. It's not a "star vehicle", so I really don't care who's in it when I see it. I'm sure the replacements will be adequate, especially in light of the thinly drawn characterizations. Sounds like it's the kind of show that you leave humming the sets.
As for Rosie, she LOVES just about everything Broadway. Especially, when they're giving away free tickets to her studio audience. And I believe she said it was the best "family" musical since The Lion King.

I really loved it as well. I didn't expect to as I considered nothing could have been as good as the film, but I was totally taken by it.
I saw the performance where the set failed between acts one and two and came back to see the show again (as their guest of course), and I enjoyed it even more the second time.
Piazza aside, this really is one of the best shows I've seen in years.

Posted: 11/28/06 at 5:53pmI think Mary Poppins, is definately one of the best musicals that I've seen. It was captivating, and some of the things they pulled-off were down-right mind boggling (think Gavin Lee's Step In Time, if you've seen the show.) I saw the show almost a week and a half ago and have not stopped talking about it to people who saw it with me or any one who will listen.
