http://www.playbill.com/news/article/119863.html

I didn't see this posted - sorry if it's a repeat.

EVERYTHING about this article makes me very very very very very happy. Sure, no one can replace Carole Burnett -- but if anyone can some close, it's Rosie.

"The Spectacle has, indeed, an emotional attraction of its own, but, of all the parts, it is the least artistic, and connected least with the art of poetry. For the power of Tragedy, we may be sure, is felt even apart from representation and actors. Besides, the production of spectacular effects depends more on the art of the stage machinist than on that of the poet."

I'm sorry, but what was playbill's source? There was no official comment from Rosie or the studios.

If you read the article, you would see it sources Fox News.

And this is posted on the off topic board as well.

For her to succeed, her format would have to be much more Ed Sullivan and much less Carol Burnett. She is a great advocate for theater, but she doesn't have a fraction of the talent of Burnett. She needs to find wrtiers she trusts; she needs to stay on script because if she goes off script, she will invariably put her foot in her mouth. That might be acceptable on daytime talk, but not so much on evening variety.

What I don't understand is the correlation between Leno leaving and this 'landing on NBC." Conan O'Brien is replacing Leno on The Tonight Show, which is an hour every weeknight. Makes no sense to even reference Leno or NBC.

Her show could possibly replace Conan's current slot. Instead of having two late-night talk shows back-to-back, they would have THE TONIGHT SHOW with Conan O'Brien (Jay Leno's old show) and follow it with Rosie's variety show.

madbrian -- I agree. I think she knows her talent limits and will make the show work properly. A good ensemble couldn't hurt her. And sticking to the script is just as dangerous as going off it. Rosie is a big target and will draw attention, so no matter what she does, it'll make the news. It's unfortunate. I generally agree with her most of the time.

I thought that Jimmy Fallon was taking over Conan's old spot. Perhaps they're gearing up for when that crashes and burns?

1) Fallon is replacing Conan.
2) This article repeatedly says a WEEKLY not nightly show.
so the "Since Jay is leaving" line makes no sense. What also makes no sense is FOX being the one to break this news when it has NOTHING to do with them!

It says it will be filmed live Sunday evenings. It will be a weekly show, not a nightly one.

edit: Joe beat me to it.

That article was very baffling-- Fox News as a source, the references to Leno make no sense-- but if the gist of the article is true this is very exciting. Rosie has incorporated her love of theater into everything she has ever done and this could be her best show ever.

Gee madbrian, I'm sure Rosie who has had a very successful career on TV, movies and stage for twenty years now, really really appreciates your career advice. However did she "succeed" without you?

YES! Rosie with an ensemble including Seth Rudetsky and who else? I'm sure there'll be guest stars, but the regulars...? Marc Shaiman? Harvey Fierstein? Whoopi Goldberg? (It's easier to get regulars for a weekly program than one that films daily, thankfully -- so these names aren't that far-fetched).

I think this is great news. Fox would only report it to be annoying and to try to gun up support against NBC. They are so going down after this next election and I am enjoying every minute of it. I do pity those who have to work there though. Fox use to be one the more liberal networks in their start-up. Bribery changes many things in this Country.

It's about time we have a good variety show again and I think Rosie is funny enough and thoughtful enough to work well with a team of regular players. She doesn't and shouldn't be Carole. She is good enough just being Rosie. The woman is multi-talented and can seriously laugh at herself. I find those who insult her as poor examples of what Americans always like to portray themselves as being, encouraging, congratulating and hard working. Rosie has done so much for America. How many of you have taken in adopted children and loved them as your own? She didn't stop there though. She takes it into the Theaters, giving children and teens opportunities to work on stage and offering them a better alternative than sitting behind a big square box all afternoon and evening. Rosie found a need to reach out and nurture other kids. Many of these whose Parents are working hard just to survive in this wasteful economy. Our schools have had to cut back so much in the field of Art because of bad Federal Management.

Doesn't this message board exist as a means of connecting the public and the Theater Community? The more we know, the better we are able to learn and support good Theater? Or bad it that is what you like? Doesn't Rosie try to do this also with her Children's Theater Group and Annual Cruises? This woman not only works herself but also helps to create more jobs for the Theatrical Community, right?

I'm so proud of her and happy that she is living still in America. So many have left the Country because of this mad and robber baron Government we have suffered with. How tired and bored I am with those who feel just fine with lying, cheating and stealing Politicians right now.

Rosie speaks up for our young adults and those Soldiers who dedicate their lives to protect us. These brave people who are willing to risk their own lives, rather than be labeled, free loaders, worthless individuals or unambitious, join the Military for many reasons. Very, very few join just so they can kill people. They trusted us to make sure they would not have to sacrifice their lives in vain or be forced to take up arms against regular civilians. Invading other Countries that have done no harm to us is warmongering. Bin Laden represented no single Government but his own agenda. So sad to see those disenfranchised ex-slave owners once again throw our Country into the stone age. We fight in Iraq while dictators wage genocide in Africa? So much for being the World's Peace Keepers and a positive example that human beings can rise above hatred and cruelty to make this a better World.

Anyone who tries to defend a Government that has mismanaged money so foolishly and then tries to sell itself as, "conservative" obviously knows little at all about economics. Instead of making bombs and waging wars, we could be building Solar Powerhouses and Wind Generators that don't kill birds. Science can be used to better society rather than destroy it. Security has always been more illusion than fact. When you force our National Security out of the Country than you have no security at all. Let's send them,"over there" to die, without the combined strength and support offered to them from our neighbors and two huge Oceans between us.

Middle Easterners can do their own, "peace keeping". They have survived many centuries without our help. Their society is older than ours. All we have done "over there" is sell them weapons that they do not need. Accidentally killing innocent civilians whose only crime is defending their families from bad Americans or those mislead by a greedy Administration. Weapons were sold to them that were never meant to be used against others but rather as a defensive means to fight off our enemies here. Not to start wars and kill the innocent.

It was sloppy security that caused 911. If that event said anything, it said that America needs to strengthen its own defenses and put those into power who want to protect our Country rather than see it burn for a profit. The UN building was an International Center. Hardly an attack on America as much as a message to the World that some citizens in Saudi Arabia were unhappy with the World's Foreign Policy. Not just America's but the Worlds lack of respect for their beliefs. Terrorists are radicals with a cause. They use traumatic events when all other negotiations fail. It was a wake-up call that our Government used to make a profit on for the very few at the expense of American Children's education, stunted technological advancement because of lack of funding, and bankrupted our Treasury. The return on war is what? Restitution. We will have to pay and pay to rebuild what we ourselves have already destroyed.

Rosie also has maintained a long term relationship with someone she truly loves. Something very few of us have ever accomplished. She works hard despite those who put her down for flimsy reasons and hidden prejudices. She has given their kids a stable home. If that isn't what being a good American is, than perhaps we need to re-examine our definitions of what being good, honest and fair are in this Country?

I'm sorry, I know this is very political but someone has to say this, if the Media won't.

Would any show actually want to share their space with a television show though?
