Idina Menzel and Kristin Chenoweth or Nathan Lane and Matthew Broderick. Take your pick.

You know, I resisted it a first, but the side by side of York and Gettlefinger does make me take pause.
I guess Side Show is the first show I saw that could be considered ... eh, maybe legendary is too strong, but infamous, maybe? Like those who got to see the original Follies or Carrie, etc, it's nice to be able to say I was there.
I can't believe no one has mentioned Anne Hathaway. Don't people always want her on the boards?

Hi, Phyllis,
I'm not meaning to start some kind of debate, but I can't quite agree with your lumping together of Follies and Carrie. IMO, Follies, although under-appreciated at the time, ran for over a year (albeit, at a financial loss) and has subsequently been recognized for the great show it is (somewhat the same thing that happened to Pal Joey -- I'm NOT comparing the two as shows per se). Carrie, however, remains an interesting failure whose shortcomings were too immense to overcome its virtues. Believe me, I'm quite proud to be able to say that I saw the original (and many subsequent) productions of Follies (an opinion not shared by my late mother, who was in the real Follies way back when -- her complaint about the Sondheim was that is wasn't "lavish enough." !!&&%%%!!!)
Here is my presumable and easily changeable perfect cast for this.
Daisy: Mandy Gonzales
Violet: Laura Benanti
Buddy: Michael Arden
Terry: Stephen Pasquale
The Boss: Raul Esparza(I feel his yelling voice would be sick)
Jake: Darius De Haas (PERFECT)
I saw SIDE SHOW 15 times and it still remains one of my favourite shows I have ever seen on Broadway. It failed because of the marketing plain and simple and it is such a shame.
PS: Lollie went on 33 times for Emily.

Side Show got such a bum deal with the cast recording.

OMG, a revival of Side Show would be amazing!

Two names without a doubt, and the casting is done.
Victoria Matlock &
Kate Shindle
Not only do they look tremendously alike, they've performed together before with the concert version of Jeckyll and Hyde, blend beautifully and have the chops to sing the challenging music. If they were cast, I would drive the bus from Ohio to bring all of Victoria's fans from here. That is my vote.
I wanted to like Side Show, but it was just so uneven. Period pastische one moment and modern pop the next with a couple of R&B nuggets thrown in. I really thought it had potential, but it seemed as if there were too many concepts and styles running rampant throughout the show that turned it into a patchwork piece. I often wondered if it was due to too much tinkering. It was something of a charming mess that just needed sharper focus. But with the theatrical event of The Lion King, the critical raves of Ragtime, and the universal devotion to the revival of Cabaret and its stars, Side Show simply did not stand a chance that season.
In my fantasy world the entire score got recorded somewhere and is just languishing in a drawer or something. Waiting for the day when somebody releases a 2cd edition. I know I am irrational.
Also irrational... no thank you on a revival. I loved the original too much. I know it had its flaws but I just don't think anything would feel the same. Just me, I'm sure.

Yes, and on Victoria's website, the performance of "In His Eyes" is beyond shrill. Didn't care for her sound on the Wicked tour, and the same goes for this example.
Gettelfinger and York would be a stunning pair, both physically and vocally.
One of the plusses of the original was it's lean n'mean look and staging. Longbottom, famous for the Radio City Christmas show, went in the opposite direction and resisted an over-produced look. He achieved something very special setting the show in a black void. He used of light and darkness, shadows and very simple effect. Set pieces (like "We Share Everything") really blossomed. He had just the right take on the proper tone for the material. It was often funny but never campy -- and how easily it could've been.
I love the score, for its accessibility as much as anything. I disagree with those who feel the music's too schizophrenic. I actually love Krieger's use of pop-infused power ballads opposite pastiche numbers, but one of its best features is its recitative, employing for the entire show what DREAMGIRLS uses in "It's All Over," so that the big emotional numbers grew out of a gathering melodic momentum.

It wasn't just power ballads, but stuff like Tunnel of Love and Devil You Know, which just didn't work, in my opinion.

I freaking loved those bleachers. Especially the way they were used to bookend the show with everybody sitting on them to start... and to finish.

As much as I would LOVE LOVE LOVE to see Alice and Emily back (because in my opinion, nobody else will BE Violet and Daisy like they were) it won't happen again.
Having said that, I think Linda Eder and Julia Murney would be pretty amazing as the Hilton sisters as well. They both have big enough voices to belt the score as it should be. I've seen a couple different regional productions, and they were okay - but after hearing the score sung by Alice and Em, you just have to hear those crazy belts to give it justice!
Interesting. I was hoping for Erin Davie as Violet. As a huge Side Show freak (pun intended), I really, really, really hope this gets a full staging. I just hope they don't over-revise it, if you know what I mean. As long as "We Share Everything" is still in I'm happy.
Erin Davie is perfect for this show, but I do hope they get a Leigh Ann Larkin or someone like that for Daisy.
I would love to see Leigh Ann Larkin as Daisy! And im curious who they have as Jake.

I had tickets for Side Show, but never got to see it because it was cancelled the week before the date I was due to see it. I had (still have) the CD and played it constantly. I agree that Alice and Emily seemed the epitome for that/those roles.
One of the original twins is pushing an extra 50 pounds
Uh, aren't they dead though?
Haha. Not the REAL Hilton twins. Thomas was talking about Emily Skinner.
