"They should just tie a rope around Britney Spears and Lindsay Lohan, and let them play the girls.
That'll sell tickets! And the promo with "Come Look at the Freaks" would NEVER have more resonance."
best12bars - that was the best birthday present anyone could have ever given me! I just laughed for 5 minutes!
I've been saying that Ethel Merman and Mary Martin should have played the twins for years.
Wait....if it's Roundabout, will Kathleen Marshall direct it? Because then we can have Harry Connick Jr. jazz up some of Buddy's songs, and people come and see it!
I know the Kenny Ortega dance show is for sure happening.
However, compared to the news of a side show revival....I DON'T CARE!!! I LOVE side show! It is by far one of my favorite shows and I am so excited to hear this news. In regards to casting...no, I don't think Alice Ripley and Emily Skinner would work as twins anymore, nor do I think that they would choose to involve themselves in the project. I think they would cast very young, as the girls are supposed to be in their early twenties.
That would be unbelieveable!
Quick story: I once saw an audition notice for a production of side show but it conflicted with my school schedule at the time (when I was in high school) so I knew that my mother probably wouldn't allow me to audition. So that day I spent 6 hours making her a 60 slide power point presentation pitching the idea to her! Ultimately, I got to audition and be in the show!
i remember reading Laura Osnes' little Playbill Quiz thing and she said that this was her favorite Broadway show. i hope Roundabout doesn't try and kill me by casting HER in it!
i love Side Show SO SO SO SO much! i have watched my (ahem) "memory" of it many many times i almost broke the DVD. it really is such a special show. i don't see why they're bothering with rewriting it, though. i hope whatever doctoring they want to do only are minute and we aren't worse for the wear
Kristen Behrendt, Alice's standby, went on twice as Violet. And she was wonderful. Alice was a workhouse, though.
And jaystarr, in the Signature Theatre production of the show, Violet (Sherri Edelen) was much heavier than her Daisy (Amy Goldberger) and the show still worked beautifully.
When this show first opened, the plan was to have either Alice and Emily OR the understudies play the show, but Emily missed so much that the producers thought it wasn't fair to Alice so they canned the idea.
I wonder if Bill Condon working on it means there's a movie version floating around in the back of his mind.
Too bad Kate Shindle is SO tall, she would be amazing as Violet. I second (or third) the Leslie Kritzer votes.

I think Sara Gettlefinger and Rachel York would be a wonderful pairing.

I keep hearing, through the grapevine, that in a coup de theatre, the twins will be played by Miley Cyrus and Hannah Montana.
*Makes obligatory Harvey Fierstein and Rosie O'Donnell as the twins joke*
I'm still not even sure if I would see this - I think it would all depend on the casting - but I'd be sort of interested to see Kelli O'Hara take on Violet.
OMG Loveclassics, that would be incredible casting BUT which would be which? I mean could they alternate?
i have recently found a love for this show and am listening to the recording right now and would love a revival. Except Hugh panaro is my favorite actor and he just sounds very differnt on the recording, i always crack up during 1 + 1 = 3.

I would basically kill to see Julia Murney as Violet.
Julia Murney?
Yes, Please!

BwayBaby18,
I guess I see Rachel as Violet and Sara as Daisy, but the thought of them switching is so interesting! It would make for a really clever marketing gimmick to get people to see the show twice. And it's pretty valid when thinking about the commonalities and differences in conjoined twins.
I saw Top Dog Underdog twice because the actors alternated playing the brothers. It was fascinating to see the subtle differences in interpretation and the shift in power.
I like it!
Sara Gettelfinger would be wonderful, but they'd have to find someone as tall as she is to play her twin!
I kinda like the idea of Kelli O'Hara and Leslie Kritzer.

Rachel York IS as tall as Sara. That's why I suggested that pairing. And they really look a lot alike. Same facial structure, same build.
I would F*** killl to see Sarah Gettelfinger & Rachel York as the Hilton twins!!... I love that idea...brilliant

I did not realize that Rachel York was so tall. Sara just seems to tower above everyone.
Okay then, the next challenge will be finding a Terry and Buddy who are as tall as Sara and Rachel.
I don't really see Kelli O'Hara in the show. I mean, don't get me wrong, she is one of my ALL TIME favorites, but I just don't see it at all.
I love York and Gettlefinger together. I think they would work perfectly together.
I think Roundabout being a non-profit organization is the only one who can revive this musical bec. of the dark subject...Please NO NEED to re-write the book. The book is perfect-iMO.
I belong to Sarah-Rachel team! Pls revive SIDE SHOW!

i love the idea of sarah and rachel. For Jake maybe roundabout could get Norm Lewis back so he can leave little mermaid because he is very underused imo.

I saw Side Show the first go-round. I think what stood in the way of its popular success was the subject matter itself. It garnered good reviews, especially from the NYT. But it just couldn't find its audience. I remember when I told some people at work, they were aghast at the subject matter -- and these were not people who didn't go to Broadway shows.
Either Lauren Bacall or Angela Lansbury saw it, were appalled at the sparse audience and were quoted as asking, "Where are the people?" There is much to be admired in the piece but I fear that it may go the way of Golden Apple, Mack and Mabel, Simply Heavenly, and a handful of others that were a little too specialized (or problematic) to make it with John Q. Public. At least we have the recording and the memories. Perhaps a good choice for Encores!?
