I am amazed no one ran with the headline "ANDREW LOYD WEBBER HAS HIS FIRST HIT SINCE PHANTOM!"

Any show recouping its investment is good news.

I have to admit this is exactly what my first thought was :/ But it deserves it, it's actually a damn good show, it's the best he's written since POTO. Everything else in between has paled in comparison.

Now that's sticking it to the man. I agree that if a second Webber show were to recoup on Broadway, I'm glad it's School of Rock and not something like Love Should Be Beaten to a Bloody Pulp.

Congrats! Any idea if Sunset will recoup? When I went it was empty, but thought it was actually a really great production - for a concert version.

Glad to hear it, loved the show. I had no idea that was only his second show ever to recoup.

It's not. I'm pretty sure Evita recouped, and I certainly hope that Cats recouped with it's 24+ year run.

RippedMan - I've been curious about this for some time. It really depends on what it for it's investment. Sunset might not have been sold out when you went - but it has consistently grossed more than a million a week and been ahead of most ALW shows in terms of grosses each week (despite only having 7 performances per week compared to 8 for every other show). A quick look at the math - if operating costs are $800,000 a week (which I doubt, that's pretty high) it's made $400,000 a week - amounting to over $6million so far. So here's hoping it does recoup. That will give it the financial "hit" status that's (sadly and bizarrely) eluded it in the past and be the perfect response to it being snubbed by the Tony's this year.
All that being said - I'm thrilled for School of Rock and ALW. Particularly since this really re-lit his fire for Broadway - and considering how he's said how much more difficult/expensive things are here in NY compared to London.

Talk around town is that Sunset was budgeted to break even. The orchestra is damn expensive. This wasn't about the money, it was about ALW getting four shows running on Broadway.

I'm not sure about that being the impetus - getting 4 shows running on Broadway - considering the snobbery he's received in being shut out of the Tony's this year, I doubt ALW wanted that type of attention. But here's hoping it does break even. I'd love if other shows followed this path with a full orchestra like that. Truly a magical experience

Huzzah! Looks like it's climbed to the top of Mount Rock! m/
Got to catch Alex Brightman on the last show of his return visit, so glad -- he was amazeballs of course. Love this show. The best parts are the most faithful parts to the movie but overall fantastic show, so much energy.

Hm. Interesting. It is a huge show to mount, and, to me, it is my favorite score of his. So I loved it! Close nailed it when I saw it - at a matinee no less. But I hope it does well. It seems an odd idea business-wise. I mean, there is no awards potential, and it has to close in June. But I'm happy to see that it didn't bleed money.

Thanks for information. I probably did not read earlier post correctly and SOR was the first one to recoup after POTO.
