And think of it this way:
Merman's Broadway debut? Girl Crazy, in which she was a supporting role only a few songs.
Verdon's Broadway debut? (After assistant choreographing a show and performing in a revue), a role in Can-Can. Damn Yankees followed soon, but that type of role was not her Broadway debut.
Hell, even Sutton debuted as an understudy in Les Mis.
Even the legends have to start somewhere, and this is only Patina's starting point. I'd say her Broadway debut was better than any of the ones above. She gets a major lead in a huge show.
Sorry to be a broken record here, but it's so silly to bash a debut performance based on not living up to basically an entire career and legacy of some of the most famous Broadway performers of all time. Especially since you accuse the younger generation of not knowing these other performers, which is a completely false statement. Young people in theater know who Ethel Merman is, believe me.
Okay. This from the irritating Goldenboy.
Glad I can make your day with restating how
mundane and mediocre Sister Act truly is.
Just wait til the reviews come out.
Then we will see who has the last laugh!
I predicted Book of Mormon Raves and
the scandalous reviews of Wonderland and Catch Me If You Can.
Sister Act gets killed next
That being said:
Real Broadway Stars of Today
Kristine Chenowith
Megan Hilty
Sutton Foster
Faith Prince
Audra McDonald
Bebe Neuwirth
Bernadette Peters
Patti Lupone
Idina Menzal
the above have star quality and are very much alive!!!
and honorable mention goes to.
Nancy Opel
Donna Murphy
Beth Leavel
Yet to prove themselve in more than one vehicle
Patina Miller (yes a nice debut.. but not star quality)
Laura Bell Bundy
and this years Tony goes to Sutton Foster.
Anyone wanna bet??
You REALLY need a hobby.
And who the hell is Kristine Chenoweth?

Adamgreer, she was in Four Christmases. Duh.
I need a hobby?
You are spell-checking for christ's sakes.
geesh.
Saw the show tonight, last preview, and it was amazing! Patina hopefully will win, and Victoria Clark should definitely get featured billing because she has a good shot there, too. They are both wonderful, and very nice at the stage door.

Wow, that's impressive. No body ever would have predicted that. You are truly a fortune teller.
I'm going to the opening night tonight and I wish everyone involved the best of luck and hope for great reviews.
Yeah, predicting raves for Book of Mormon and pans for Wonderland is not exactly going out on a limb.

I could be wrong, but I don't think Patina Miller is going to get all out raves. She still reminds me of Max on "Living Single".
I left Kate Baldwin off of my
current Broadway Stars list.
I love her.
She has the Goldenboy Star blessing.
Anyone who says that Megan Hilty is a Broadway star while Donna Murphy only gets honorable mention is an idiot.
"I need a hobby?

geesh."
Maybe because adam knows how to spell and it was also a pretty obvious misspelling. I noticed it as soon as I saw it. And sad that spell checking doesn't seem to be important to you. Oh, and Christ should be capitalized.
Well the reviews are out.
Mixed .
And not all roses for Patina.
They missed Whoopi. Just as I did.
Just as I said...nice debut but something is missing.
and christ was I right!
oh did spell christ without a cap???
damn!
Maybe Kristine Chenowith can take over for Patina!
From Broadway World Review:
Whoopi Goldberg looms large over the new musical comedy "Sister Act," and that's part of the problem. While she co-produced, Goldberg isn't onstage, and the outsized sense of hilarity mixed with humanity she brought to the 1992 motion picture is sorely missed. Patina Miller makes an altogether impressive Broadway debut as diva-on-the-run Deloris Van Cartier, singing up a veritable storm, but the decision to plaster Goldberg's name on numerous signs outside the theater raises comparisons that flatter neither Miller nor this garish production.

I'll play with the irritant. You quoted a portion of the Variety review, not the "Broadwayworld Review", and failed to mention any of the other reviews of Miller, which were all positive, with a few flat out raves:
"Patina Miller, recreating her starring performance from the West End production, has a radiant presence and a strong voice with a tangy timbre...she truly comes into her own when Deloris sheds her purse full of wisecracks and begins bonding with the friendly nuns cowed by the church’s stern mother superior, played by Victoria Clark...when she is slashing away at the sky with her arms, reaching for heavenly inspiration as she exhorts her flock of gawky nuns to shed their inhibitions and let the spirit put their hips in motion, Ms. Miller is a delight to watch."
-The New York Times
"Goldberg's old part, that of the wannabe-nightclub singer Deloris Van Cartier, is played to perfection by newcomer Patina Miller, whose voice, dancing and charm are, ahem, heavenly. "Yeah, I'm fabulous, baby!" she sings in an early song, the perfect way to announce this wonderful new talent. "Feast your eyes — can't disguise/my star quality!"
-The Associated Press
"Patina Miller, as Delores Van Cartier, the Donna Summer wanna-be taking refuge in a church from her mobster boyfriend,is full of funk and spunk and has a voice that’ll knock you off your feet. Last seen in the Central Park version of "Hair," Miller lives up to Dolores’ hymn to herself, "Fabulous, Baby!"
-NY Daily News
"And just as the films confirmed Goldberg’s box office appeal, so the show is likely to sprinkle stardust on a roof-raising singer named Patina Miller...Miller’s big, brassy voice and unwholesome swagger inject just the right amount of sizzle into the proceedings."
-Bloomberg
"But the show’s lead, Patina Miller, is a tornado-like belter with fine comic timing. We’ll hear from her again come Tony time."
-NY Post
"As Deloris--who hides out as Sister Mary Clarence--Patina Miller works hard to not imitate Whoopi Goldberg and ends up putting her stamp on the role with pipes and conviction."
-Village Voice
"Patina Miller, in a breakthrough Broadway debut, . . . has a big, easygoing, vibrato-tinged voice and an insouciance that makes her character's dumbness (she expects a Jacuzzi in the convent . . . really?) almost charming."
-Newsday
"Patina Miller delivers a breakout performance as Deloris, displaying genuine sex appeal, musical-comedy chops and a phenomenal voice."
-AM NY
"Patina Miller sings like a dream, looks like a million, and has confidence to spare. She's a real pro."
-Backstage

Clark and Miller are locks for nominations. I could see it get nods for any of the following: Musical, score, book, orchestrations, direction, choreography, sets, and costumes. I could also just as easily see it shut out in anyall of those categories though.
Patine will be nominated,
She won't win.
I'll take bets for christ's sake.
And I know christ should be capitalized but frankly... I don't feel like hitting my shift button.
