Out of the 8 shows I saw during my trip two weeks ago, I enjoyed this one the most. When people ask me what shows I saw, and I include SpongeBob, their reaction to me is so funny. I really don't blame them. When this was first announced I had the same negative reaction. But to my surprise, it was so clever, fun and Ethan Slater is a star.

Is that how they decide the category, though? The most out there, exciting thing should win?"
haterobics, I don't think the most out there thing should win, but I see how it could sound like that. In the case of sound design, for instance, I thought the subtle, austere work on The Band's Visit was superior to SpongeBob's wacky live-foley sound effects (impressive in their own right). In the case of costumes, I confess that I found My Fair Lady's to be very dull. It looked like it was cobbled together from other Catherine Zuber shows and lacked a distinctive personality. Whereas SpongeBob ingeniously answered questions of how to present underwater creatures in ways both beautiful and appropriate. They did so much storytelling whereas MFL felt a bit pedestrian to me. And this isn't to say that Zuber isn't a talented designer. I think she's done brilliant work before (The Coast of Utopia trilogy stands out) but was uninspired by her work here.

Would it really kill you to take a few seconds and look her name up if you love her so much? Her name is Christina.

SpongeBob is one of the most unexpectedly touching musical I have ever seen. Many thanks to the show, all involved, and those who recommended me to see it on this board!

I'm going to admit, even though I pretty much hated the show, I think it getting a costumes Tony wouldn't be unwarranted. You could totally see where the homage was to the cartoon, and how very creative it NEEDED to be to be translated to human form. (And I totally see why it got its Tony for set design.)
