Saw the show recently and just think it has gone to the dumps. It is so white washed and just dull. EVERYONE is just going through the blocking and singing the songs.
I truly miss the Off-Broadway Spring Awakening. It was such an amazing show then.I wish everyone could have seen it then. Now it has turned into a commercial mess that needs major clean-up. It has lost its charm. So dull. And as the days go on...I think it may just be getting worse. The cast seems bored. Tired. Used.
And the theatre was nowhere near full. Just sad.

And to think so many SA fans thought of it as
'the next RENT' so early on...
How *right* they were. Who would've known?

You can't base that off one night.
I went back in Feburary and the theater was really full.
I dunno.
What night did you go on?

Posted: 3/25/08 at 1:18amI dont think it has anything to do with how many seats are being sold. I think its about the quality of the show and how it just doesn't have the same charm and uniqueness.

I have gone and friends have gone several times over the past few months and it has just been worse everytime. Not based on one night. So thats even more sad. I mean I really wanted it to be good. Stay good. I brought people to see it over the past few months who came to NYC to visit, and everytime it was a let down. The show is just like on auto pilot. Really bad auto-pilot.

Posted: 3/25/08 at 1:20amJudging by the attendance records, the show isn't going anywhere anytime soon. But I've heard it's been dull lately. Last time I saw it in Jan it was amazing, but that was with a lot of understudies. Here's hoping that the new cast in may will bring some energy.

The show from day 1 lost something from the Atlantic to Broadway.

Posted: 3/25/08 at 1:23amI haven't seen it since Gideon Glick left last July, and I'm going to keep it that way. I've heard awful things about the replacement casts and the show now, and I actually enjoyed it with the full original cast, so I'd rather not ruin those memories.

"And the theatre was nowhere near full. Just sad." That you added to your edits.
I wonder why you keep coming back then.

Just saw the show the other day, and although I did feel that the energy wasn't as "on" as it was when I saw the OBC (a little after Tony time), I honestly didn't think it had anything to do with the cast members...I thoroughly enjoyed all of the replacements. I actually think it was the band, at least at the performance I saw, that had lost energy since last year. Songs like "The Dark I Know Well", whose orchestrations I remember were loud and pulsing and disturbing over the summer (as they should be), seemed dampened; in fact, the sound overall was a bit muffled throughout the show.
I still enjoyed the show immensely, but did have that observation. Anyone feel the same way about the band/sound? Because my problem was definitely not with the newbies in the cast.

Posted: 3/25/08 at 1:50amSad to hear, hope it gets better. I found it to be extremely touching when I saw it.
With Clay Aiken in Spamalot, all of Broadway is singing a collective "There! Right! There!" -Me-

Posted: 3/25/08 at 3:24amI saw the final preview performance at the Atlantic. it was a pretty electric night. Got to meet and talk to Duncan Sheik and Steven Sater. Mr. Sater hugged me in the lobby at intermission and we chatted. He said that they found out that the show was moving somewhere else but they didn't know where. At the time I think they were thinking another off-Broadway house. He was like a little kid. It was a performance and an evening to remember. I have since wondered if I want to see it on Broadway. I could have seen it while in NYC in December, but that night kept running through my head and I opted not to. And I doubt I will see it on Broadway. I think my only regret was not getting the cast to sign my Playbill. They walked out right behind me after the show. No people clammoring for signatures. They were just walking, talking and laughing. What a great night!

The show from day 1 lost something from the Atlantic to Broadway.
I heartily disagree. I saw the show three times at the Atlantic, and I've seen it six times on Broadway now. I think the Broadway production is much deeper, more thorough, and filled with an intensity that was lacking at the Atlantic.
I last saw the show on a Tuesday night in February and the cast was on fire. The best I've seen in my nine viewings. The audience was engaged, and the feeling inside the theatre was electric. The show just keeps getting more and more rich with repeated visits for me, and the cast seems more in tune with one another and with the telling of this story than ever.

Posted: 3/25/08 at 5:29amThe bombastic direction and lighting make it impossible for me to attempt to see this show a second time, which is a shame cause i rather enjoy the recording.

Last week it played to 99% capacity. There couldn't have been too many empty seats.
I saw the show on a nondescript Tuesday evening not too long ago, and was impressed with how the cast continued to give it their all. The performances were all pretty strong, except for Glenn Feschler as the Adult Men, who's kind of a disaster. Lea Michelle and Jonathan B. Wright were both out that night, but their understudies (Alexandra Socha, who I've seen in the role more times than Lea Michelle, and Matt Doyle) were wonderful.

Posted: 3/25/08 at 8:29amI saw the March 23 7PM show and believe it is still in great shape and holding up well. The theatre was full and the audience appreciative. The only performance I didn't like was the Adult Woman who was too over the top and buffoonish for me.

I've been seeing it every couple of months since Jan. 2007. I have noticed no real decline. I think it's held up better than do most shows that run that long. I saw it most recently in January, and half of the cast was understudies, which actually made it even fresher.
A couple of the original cast do look bored sometimes, but I noticed that even a year ago!

Posted: 3/25/08 at 9:16amBrianS: The last couple of weeks, people have been on spring break, which could account for the high percentages of attendance. Even so, this past winter, Spring Awakening seems to be pulling in just okay grosses with the exception of a few $600,000+ weeks. I just don't see this show closing before the summer rush though, when students are out of school.

Posted: 3/25/08 at 9:31amI saw the show in March 2007 and January 2008 and the carry over cast memebers did look out of it but the show still moved me. I think it will peter out some time in the fall when the tour starts to kick in and all the hard core fans can truck to locations closer to home to get their fixes.
