Underwhelming performence by three actors whom i adore.

its cause they condensed it to it like a 1 second clip with these unnecessary close up shots. this is why stage doesn't work on live TV. The cameras don't know how to film theatre.

But I've Been sounds really great on their website.

This morning, Next to Normal stars Alice Ripley, Brian D'Arcy James and Kyle Dean Massey visited Good Morning America to perform "I Amthe One" from the Tony-winning score by Tom Kitt.
I didn't know Tom Kitt wrote the music and lyrics. I'm sure Brian Yorkey didn't, either.
And did we really need to put Stage Tube in front of what's merely a link to another site?
"I've Been" sounds good until d'Arcy James goes into his falsetto with Kyle. I almost started laughing. Before and after that though, I think I like his performance better than Bobby Spencer's.
And yes, "You Don't Know / I Am the One" was horrifically uninspired.
i've only seen videos of Brian on youtube, so I can't say much about his performance, but every single time I see him, I can't help but think of him as Shrek. Trying really hard to think of him as Dan, but Shrek just pops into my head.

Brian D'Arcy James was a well-respected, Tony nominated actor long before Shrek. I'm sorry you're having trouble picturing him playing anything but a green ogre, but really, the man has an extensive resume beyond Shrek, child.

Thank you adamgreer. completely agree.
Agreed. Brian D'Arcy James is a very well respected Broadway actor who has done much more than Shrek. And come on, he looks nothing like an ogre.

Rough.
I don't like Kyle's voice

While I recognized that the performances did not reflect how they are on the stage, I was so happy to have caught this this morning! It was completely by chance that my fire alarm went off and I was up at that time, and for some reason turned on GMA which I never ever watched. So happy to see my favorite show performing! I can't wait to see it again before Alice leaves.
I understand the Shrek comment though. I have listened to his voice so much as Shrek recently, that at times the sound quality between the two characters is similar. He is an amazing performer and he should be very proud of all the work on his extensive resume.

It's his regular voice. That's how he sounds. It's not some "Shrek voice." Go listen to the Titanic or Sweet Smell of Success cast recordings. Listen to how he sings Barrett's Song and At the Fountain, on each album. You'll see that this "voice" existed long before Shrek. It's not some similar "sound quality."

There are many well respected actors who are on broadway or who have been on broadway that I do not like and I am sorry to say that
Brian d’Arcy James is one of them. I can not stand his voice and his acting in N2N is very inconsistent and flat. But this is just my opinion.
Brian's natural singing voice just sort of happened to sound like Shrek. This coincidence, I'm sure, helped him get the role he is now probably most famous for.

With all due respect, I completely disagree with both of your points.
After seeing Jessica twice now, I really can't take Alice seriously. Especially in this video.
Is there a website (or perhaps a section on this site) where I can find a list of Broadway shows performing on talk shows ahead of time? I know sometimes we have Talk Show Listings on here, but both this performance and the La Cage aux Folles one from weeks ago went under the radar. While I'm glad I can see it (linked) on here after it airs, I'd much rather know ahead of time so I can set my DVR. Thanks!

and I respect that

I was simply making a comment. I am no child and I am well aware of Brian d'Arcy James' resume and how respected he is in this industry. I myself do have respect for him. I was just simply responding to what I thought about the video.

Does Brian naturally have a deep talking voice and a higher singing voice?

I hope no one judges her based solely on that performance. All performers have off-days. It's just unfortunate that hers happened to be on national television. If you can't take her seriously based on full performances you've seen, you're entitled (though I completely disagree).
