The award-winning percussion, rhythm and comedy sensation, Stomp will end its (almost) 29-year run on January 8, 2023. Stomp's North American and European tours will continue to run. STOMP opened at The Orpheum Theatre on February 27,1994. When it closes, it will have played 13 previews and 11,472 regular performances.

I can only greet this as good news.
Hopefully the Orpheum will now actually be free for once to house an actual off-Broadway play/musical.

I saw this ages ago when I was in NYC for the high school Business Professionals of America Nationals competition.

I would not want to hazard a guess as to how much it would cost to get the Orpheum back into respectable condition to house off-B shows at any meaningful level. Unfortunately, I suspect the real estate will have a different future.

I wish a non-profit would scoop it up or nyc makes it a landmark. Always wanted to go inside there but never cared for Stomp.

I fear you might be right. No space is too small for condo development in nyc. And the theater wouldn't yield any shiny Tony Awards if purchased by one of the large nonprofits.

Well, I went to go see STOMP for the first time last night, after putting it off for all these years.
I really enjoyed it, but I do tend to enjoy this sort of show.
I posted thoughts about it here.
As I mention in the video, the production didn't feel stale to me at all; the cast seemed to be having a blast. But then, I have nothing to compare it to.
Also, I was interested to see inside the Orpheum for the first time. I don't necessarily think it's as much of a dump as some have said. Its current condition didn't seem any worse than the Lucille Lortel - a theatre I'm not particularly fond of, but nobody seems to complain about it. I will say I'm not a fan of the deep-and-narrow layout of the house, but again, a lot of the older Off-Broadway theatres have that same shape.

Wow! STOMP literally became part of that neighborhood's landscape - but things do have to come to an end at some point in time.
I hope not but I fear that we will lose the Orpheum in the process.

The problems with the current condition are, from reports, more from the backstage and infrastructure perspective than the audience's. The comparison to the Lortel is apt although I do hear people kvetching about the Lortel pretty often. The seats are pretty bad. Unfortunately, it is likely a moot issue but I'd be surprised if it would pass muster with Equity.

Wondering since the Orpheum is owned by the same group as Minetta Lane if maybe Audible might program there...I could see them paying to renovate the space etc
anyone else going to the last show?
