BAH! You beat me to it. Damn you.
I don't understand what this means. Entirely new revival or Ullman's production with a different cast?
I have no idea. Here's my dream "Multiracial" cast for STREETCAR:
Blanche: Ming Na
Stanley: Stanley from "The Office"
Stella: Gabourey Sidibe
Mitch: Hugh Dancy
Blanche - The Na'vi chick from Avatar (in full Na'vi makeup)
Stanley - Jar Jar Binks
Stella - Anne Coulter
After Sandy Bullock snags the Oscar though, I'm thinking she may be a good fit for Blanche.

So Taz, Blanche is trying to "connect" with Stanley?
Blanche: Mo'Nique
Stanley: Ken Watanabe
Stella: Taylor Swift
Mitch: Christoph Waltz
Eunice Hubbel: Lea Salonga
Steve Hubbel: Peter Dinklage
Flowers for the Dead woman: Patti Lupone
Doctor: Denzel Washington
Nurse: Helen Mirren
Actually, AC126748, looking at your pic, I would love to see McTeer do Stella. Almost as much as I want to see Cate do it again..
If they can't bring at least Cate with it, why even bother with this production? I'm sure it's great, but the draw was Cate's performance. If they can't get her, why not just do a totally new production?
McTeer's Blanche would be epic, Jordan.
I think this is an entirely new production, just capitalizing on the play being hyped so much this past season.

The article says the producer has given up on transferring the Sydney Comany production.
I think it's a terrific idea. It's ridiculous after this many decades of this play being in existence, that we can't just let the best actor, regardless of race, a shot at these iconic roles. Why shut them out?

I think they should transfer the Donmar production with Rachel Weisz... she was mesmerizing as Blanche!
It's foolish to do this without Blanchett, unless they can get another real A-lister to play Blanche and/or Stanley.

I'm sure there are plenty of A-listers who would tackle the role. A multiracial cast is a great idea - better CAT - but what multiracial stars? Let the speculation begin!
So by multi-racial, they just mean a black cast right?
I think a black Mitch would work. The DuBois family were the antebellum and Stanley is described as a 'polack' in the play and to cut that line would be cutting a lot of the tension between Blanche and Stanley as there is one scene where Stanley gets in Blanche's face about the word.

strummergirl, be careful. If you say anything against anyone "non-white" playing a traditionally white role you're branded as a racist on this board.

Let's face it. This producer is the same as the Black CAT revival. That revival didn't really make a great amount of sense, historically, as was pointed out my major outlets when it ran. I doubt making a STREETCAR which makes much sense is a priority of his.
That said, I enjoyed many of the performances from CAT - let's leave Debbie Allen out of this discussion - and I'm excited by what talents would be attracted to a Multiracial or Black STREETCAR.

Jordan, god love ya, but it's not saying that gets you branded a racist, or more precisely, expressing thoughts are of racist variety, or at at least thoughts that have been informed by a lifetime of privilege. Personally, I think maybe you got your nose out of joint by some of us who might tend to be a little voracious in our feelings on this issue, and that may be blinding you from doing some more critical thinking about it. Not one ounce of offense meant here.
That said, when I saw multi-racial Steetcar I wondered if keeping Stanley white and having Stella and Blanche be black might be an interesting take on the material.
I feel like I saw a production once where Euince and her husband were black, but sometimes I think I just have really vivid hallucinations.
Phyllis, trust me when I say that my opinions have nothing to do with a lifetime of privilege. My thinking when it comes to these things has nothing at all to do with the fact that I mind seeing "non traditional casting" on stage. Far from it. I just don't like seeing casting that takes the audience out of the plot (even if it's for 1 split second) or doesn't make sense in the context of the piece. Having a black Blanche or Stella could work absolutely, but Stanley is a Pollock. He needs to be white.

I totally agree, for the most part, unless someone can make a case for black pole in New Orleans in the fifties. Forties? Forties, right?
But you were also taken out of Carousel, too, right?
Look, I don't think the issue is (heh) all black and white. I think it's complicated and there's certainly a debate to be had, but much like Godwin's law can be invoked, there needs to be a law where as soon as someone says, "Well, why not a white Effie? Or a white Queenie? Let's do Flower Drum Song with a bunch of German girls!"
Effie's Law. There. Consider it coined. And it must legally be attributed to ME.
I never saw that production of CAROUSEL. I think you're referring to 110 IN THE SHADE and yeah it took me quite a while to figure out who was who in that production.
I like Effie's law. There's no clear white or wong to it.
