Under the direction of Lonny Price, the show features book and lyrics by Don Black and Christopher Hampton, music of course, by the aforementioned Andrew Lloyd Webber. Close is joined by Michael Xavier, Siobhan Dillon, and Fred Johanson in the leads. This incarnation comes direct from a sold-out engagement last year at the English National Opera, which marked Close’s West End debut, features a 40-piece orchestra.

Enough with this misconception! Glenn only wears maybe a handful of her original costumes and even those are slighted modified. Many of the costumes are redesigned - dresses in the original now redesigned as pant suits. A few are totally missing including this fabulous leopard print gown that was breathtaking in the original production. At least her "As If We Never Said Goodbye" costume is in its full glory.

I think they should have gone "all or nothing" on Anthony Powell's original designs for Norma. I can't imagine the story that these were all just pulled from Close's personal costume closet is completely true, but they do sort of have the combined "pieced together" appearance of just that, which I think is a little disrespectful of the original designs. It certainly wouldn't have been difficult to locate the original pieces that are missing, though I imagine the pant suits are here instead of the gowns because of all the stairs.

And it's a Critics' Pick from Brantley!

So far they seem more positive than the original 1994 reviews... Particularly for Close. It does bother me the divisiveness that is to ALW's score and the book/lyricists - Hampton and Black. Particularly Bentley from the NY Times. How are they simply blown away by Close's performance calling it one of the best of the century and then taking cheap shots about the music (basically repeating some of the same dismisive remarks they said 22 years ago)

Because with the exception of three or four songs, the score is pretty bland.

Pleased about the raves for Close and mostly positive notices on the production.
However, I'm surprised not many of the publications have made even a slight mention of "young Norma." An element that has been added and a total waste in my opinion.
