re: Sally Bowles

susan!! though i never saw her in the role, i have her cd where she sings "maybe this time" and "cabaret". i know she'd be an outstanding sally bowles, and i'd love to see it with either raul, adam, or norbert as the emcee.
(i know we're talking about a revival and all of those people have already played those parts. but still. i'd like to see it.)

re: Sally Bowles

If I could go back in time - it would have to be Judi Dench (above)again, she has never been bettered in the part . Very few of the actresses mentioned are accomplished enough, to play third-rate well and that particular type of third rate, which is the challenge with Sally, perhaps the exception would be Colette, but I'd not be convinced. Jane Horrocks or Maria Freidman would however be very good (again).

re: Sally Bowles

Judi Dench's performance as Sally Bowles underlined the key to the role. You don't have to be able to sing, but you really have to be a drop dead actress. Sally isn't supposed to be the best singer but she has to really be able to nail the title song.

Jane Horrocks was Sally in the original Donmar run of the most recent revival. She was an absolute abomination and should be banned from ever performing the role ever again as long as she lives.

re: Sally Bowles

I'd have to go with Joley Fisher too. Of all the Sallys I've seen, she also impressed me the most. Her decline from party girl to pathetic lost soul was thrilling to watch. She was literally falling apart by the end of the show....an utter basket case. Seeing Gena Gershin (sp?) shortly after made me realize how much thought and effort Fisher put into her portrayl. It was almost too exhausting to watch. I'd like to see Toni Collette in the role too and thanks fiatlux for posting the Judi Dench picture....always wondered what she looked like as Sally. I also saw Jane Horrocks in the show and wasn't impressed at all. For the first time Sally seemed mentally challenged.

re: Sally Bowles

I agree that Jane Harrocks wasn't appropriate in the role of Sally. She looked like a sitcom actress up there and totally missed all the layers of Sally. I wish I could have seen Natasha in the role, because I hear how wonderful she was, but she's not a good singer. Her singing on the cast recording is painful to listen to, but I'm sure she totally nailed the acting. I have a real problem with non-singers staring in musicals AND winning awards, because I just don't understand how you can be considered the BEST if you are missing one of the most important elements of the "Best Actress in a MUSICAL." That being said, I think the casting of Sally should be a search for the acting chops 1st, but the singing has to be there, too.

How old is Sally supposed to be?

I have no problem listening to Natasha on the recording. I think her take on the title number is the best I have ever heard.

re: Sally Bowles

If we're going name for Sally, I want Jane Krakowski, Megan Mullally, or Brittany Murphy. If I get my dream cast, then Sally would be Susan Egan and the Emcee would be Kevin Cahoon.

THANK YOU! That's what I've been saying for AGES! And Natasha is INCREDIBLY painful to listen to on the cast recording!

re: Sally Bowles

Let's throw some new names out there...How about Jennifer Garner from Alias. She has an awesome voice and is a great actress. I would really love to see someone ethnic take on the role too. It may not be "period", but neither are sparkly nipples. How about Daphne Rubins-Vega or even Heather Headley. I think it could really turn the tables a little.

re: Sally Bowles

The point of it is that she's not a good singer. No, I don't condone non-singers in musicals as a rule of thumb, but they were going for something really important about the character with this one. There are certain instances in which theatricality takes precedence over that principle, IMO.

re: Sally Bowles

EXACTLY Emcee. Which is why listening to Natasha on the CD doesn't bother me at all. Is her rendition of Cabaret pleasant? Nope. Is it spine chilling? Pretty much. And was that the point? Of course it was.

re: Sally Bowles

Spine chilling . . . well, yes, in a "nails on a chalkboard" sort of way. She may have acted the crap out of the song, but that doesn't come through in the recording. That's why I say I wish I would have seen her, because I'm sure she was WONDERFUL in the role. Nevertheless, there are a ton of WONDERFUL actress out there who can also sing. Toni Collette, for example.

Toni Collette would be a divine Sally.

re: Sally Bowles

I quite like Natasha's singing on the recording. And I find Jill Haworth on the OBC spectacular. and she wasn't the best singer either.

Try hearing Brooke Shields sing Sally (which was before she had training she had for WT and Chicago, her voice is much better now.) That was pretty painful - but in some strange way her singing still worked.

re: Sally Bowles

So Sally should deliberately sing badly?

"So Sally should deliberately sing badly? "

Not badly, just not so showily well that you wonder why she's stuck in a third-rate cabaret- like Liza Minnelli. It's a difficult balancing act and I'd still go with Maria Friedman, mainly because I 'm tired of actresses attempting 1920's English accents (which are a lot different from what they are now) and getting them so very wrong, there's plenty of the real thing.

As for Jane Horrocks, I've been reminded by my partner, that she did get very bored with the part after the first month and seemed to sleepwalk the show after that, so maybe not. But she was exceptional the night I saw her.

"I have a real problem with non-singers staring in musicals AND winning awards, because I just don't understand how you can be considered the BEST if you are missing one of the most important elements of the "Best Actress in a MUSICAL."

The award is for best actress not best singer. Surely, it's about how an actor or actress portrays the character not how well they sing.
