I'm a fan of Luis Fonsi and had his greatest hits album on constant rotation when I was in college 10 years ago... pre-Despacito. That being said I agree with you, that he is a weird choice for this.
I guess they just want ratings? or a new audience?
I still wish Lady Gaga and Adam Lambert were involved in this production somehow.
I can see why they’d pick him, he is “hot” right now, and I like the idea of a Hispanic Judas that way there isn’t a weird white/black race debate happening, but he doesn’t strike me as someone with a very gruff voice, which I kind of want for Judas.

Riedel says nothing of the sort in the article. He says Webber is interested and essentially putting out a feeler. That's it.

I just Googled and listened to "Despacito" for the first time. This song is a hit?

I'm an unapologetically ardent ALW fan, but I do wish he'd stop pursuing pop stars (e.g., Leona Lewis, Nicole Scherzinger, et al.,) for musical theatre. There are more than enough studio-created and auto-tuned "singers" on the radio and TV; I wish we could leave musical theatre to those who can really sing.

You're right. I changed it to "might" in my post. But it is still a poor choice.
Adam Lambert confirmed on twitter he will not be Judas. Bummer. Probably didn't work with his Queen tour dates.

According to Sara Bareilles' instagram, rehearsals seem to have started today.
She posted a picture of her, Tim Rice, John Legend, and Brandon Victor Dixon that has since been deleted. Could Dixon be playing Judas?
Does Dixon have the range for Judas? (Not that the question is particularly important; I mean, John Legend quite plainly can't sing the part of Jesus.) Another possibility is that he's one of the other roles or a producer of the project; he does have Of Mice and Men and Hedwig under his belt.
Casting, finally: http://tvline.com/2018/02/22/jesus-christ-superstar-live-cast-brandon-victor-dixon-judas/
I think BVD will be great as Judas

I'm skeptical of his range. I hope he proves me wrong. Also, nothing against him, but I was hoping for a bigger name.
This link says Norm Lewis is in it. Which one is right???

Don't they both say Norm is playing Caiphas?

What's confusing? BVD is Judas, Norm Lewis is Caiaphas.

Now it does! They had someone else's name previously.
It had his character's name from Scandal.
Has there been any word yet about how to get tickets for this in Brooklyn? (...Is it wishful thinking that it'll be open to public at all?)

Brandon Victor Dixon as Judas! There is a god! LOL
He will be phenomenal, and, yes, he DOES have the range.
I am still skeptical about John Legend as his high notes are usually floated and whispery. They really should have gone with a rock tenor for Jesus. But, other than that, I am good with the cast.
Good for them! While I know brandon will be great, im not that excited about this casting. He kinda left a bad taste in my mouth over his Once on this island comments.

I'm wondering if they're going for a different approach. There are a lot of voices that I love but while they're big, they have a different quality than the screlters I typically think of with JCS. This JCS is seeming more smooth and soulful than rock and belting.
Makes me happy.

The ensemble was announced today and a mix of names very recognizable to Broadway fans: Christine Dwyer, Lauren Zakrin, Joel Perez, Felicia Boswell, F. Michael Haynie, Christina Sajous, Kyle Taylor Parker, and...Jonah Platt, among others. Bahiyah Hibah, one of the greatest female dancers on Broadway in the past 15 years, is a featured dancer.
Wish it was Lea Michele!

eek is right...I had no idea how thin his voice was until I heard this. It's a good thing they have such a strong group of Broadway voices in the other roles and the ensemble. They are going to have to carry the show.
