I saw this, and thought it odd that Jackie looked so bored on stage considering the reason she became interested in singing was because of The Phantom of the Opera, and here she is singing a duet with the original Christine. That would certainly have had me smiling, or excited, or showing some sort of emotion on my face. If that didn't then the idea of possibly winning a million bucks would have, but that was a secondary thought for me.
Although when I think about it further, she is only 10, she probably saw Phantom with Jennifer Hope Wills, or Rebecca Pitcher, and it may be Emmy Rossum on any recording she may own, so singing with Brightman may mean nothing to her at all. I realize I am rambling, but those were my thoughts at the time.

I was very surprised that Jackie didn't win last night--but it may have been the best outcome for that little girl. Performing every night in Las Vegas is a bit much for a child. Hopefully, with the guidance of her parents, she'll find a better venue for her talent.

Actually, she's admitted that she's very familiar with Sarah Brightman's work, as demonstrated by the several Sarah Brightman songs she's performed on the show. And as a big Sarah Brightman fan myself, it's clear that she's emulating Sarah's vocal style, right down to the way she dips or scoops her voice (in the SAME places that Sarah does), and also her stage mannerisms, (the arm/hand gestures as she's singing).
Interesting that she got to perform with Sarah, nonetheless.

Jackie Evancho is going to seriously damage her voice if she keeps trying to sound like a full lyric soprano.
I think that's what Sarah was referring to when she said she hoped Jackie would save her voice and take care of it.

@jimmycurry01 To me... it looked like she was in awe.. and speechless. If I were that age, I would have the same expression.

I agree.
I was so glad Sarah Brightman said what she said. Someone needed to. Jackie is singing songs so far ahead of her age, using some questionable technique. She risks damaging or stunting her voice if she doesn't have firm, top-level coaching and a safe schedule.
I can't believe that no one has mentioned what HORRIBLE shape Sarah Brightman's voice is in. She was absolutely AWFUL. At first she could barely be heard and then when she did sing the sound was unsupported by her breath and very wobbly like an old church lady. It was a total embarrassment.

My daughter mentioned "Jackie sounds better than Sarah".

dwperkins, her voice has always sounded like that to me. I don't understand how people can enjoy her singing--I can't stand her sing Phantom. Jackie seems to be imitating the quality of Sarah's voice that I hate the most, and I really don't understand how other people can't hear it.
Sarah's voice hasn't sounded the way it sounded during her Phantom days in awhile.
Her voice is a bit lower in her Harem and Symphony CDs which I think sounds a lot better than she did back then. I think she sounded terrific.
She can't always hit the note at the end of Phantom of the Opera anymore she said.
Both women were at the top of their game and looked gorgeous.
Sarah will always be my Queen. I, too, am glad she said what said about preserving Jackie's voice.

Wasn't Julie Andrews singing opera at that age? Is that why she had vocal problems later? I'm not knocking her, because I think she had the most beautiful female voice I've ever heard...but she was either 10 or 12 years old and singing arias, I believe.
I don't watch American Idol, but I had watched this girl's performance a few weeks ago. After this episode aired, a friend at school mentioned that "some opera singer" sang with the girl and sounded so worse than the girl even though "this is what she does for a living." Well, I'll admit that I initially thought of Sarah when he mentioned the performance for some reason. I guess it's the Broadway community in me, but she was my first thought.
I don't know the proper technique for classical opera performance, but I can say that yes, Julie Andrews was singing arias at a young age, and she was using proper technique. I don't remember the exact age, but she talks about it in her memoir.
Two words of warning for the baby soprano

The problem isn't necessarily singing arias at her age. The problem is trying to make the voice sound like a mature soprano's when the singer is in reality a 10 year old girl. Doing so puts more pressure and strain on the throat. Also, it's generally frowned upon because the more you learn an aria before you're ready, the more you learn it with the mistakes you're making. It's harder to undo those mistakes because they're ingrained.
I also don't know why people freak out so much about her range. Hitting high notes is pretty easy when you're a young girl. For all we know, she could end up a mezzo or a spinto.
You're right.
Julie Andrews lost her voice because she was such a terrible smoker. I remember an interview with her on the Rosie O'Donell Show where she said her parents made her go see a throat specialist at age 13 because they were concerned her powerful singing would damage her vocals at such a young age, and Julie said she was afraid the doctor would discover she's already been smoking for a year, and would tell her parents! Shocking! Anyways, Julie eventually had throat surgery because of damage from smoking, and thats how she lost her voice. I suggest Jackie not take up smoking, first rule in maintaining your voice.
