"I feel like I remember the Phantom's deformity being due to a fire in the opera house... and him being a relative of someone? Am I totally crazy? In the movie, he was rescued from the circus as a child by Madame Giry, and allowed to live in the opera house"

In the original Leroux story, the Phantom was deformed from birth. I think what you are remembering may be from one of the many film variations.

I agree. I think a few film variations are working their way into this. At the end (of the stage performance anyway) the Phantom sings "This face, which earned a mother's fear and loathing.... A mask, my first unfeeling scrap of clothing..." Definitely suggests a deformity from birth, just as described in the novel.

Someone mentioned the acid in the face. That was from the '43 film with Claude Raines as the Phantom. The versions with Herbert Lom ('62) and Maximilian Schell ('83) had him disfigured with fire. Neither of these were vaguely similar to the Leroux novel.

Then there was the Robert Englund version, in which he made a deal with the devil -- gave up his "pretty face," so that the world would love his music.

Regarding the change in lyrics... I noticed it had been done in various places in the film, i.e. "Notes," but it didn't bother me overall.

"Patrick though - does have the voice of an angel and sang his own songs - unlike most of the cast."

Actually, Undiscovered, the entire cast *did* do their own singing ..except for Minnie Driver (though she sings Learn To Be Lonely during the credits).

I know that there have been small changes in lyrics differing from the Original, to Canadian, etc. But those really, weren't numerous. What i meant to ask (it was really really late, my bad) was did they go all out and decide to throw in synonyms for every other word and change phrasing around, so it didnt seem to flow as well, like in the first "Notes" scene?

**EDIT** sry, i posted that without reading the rest. So, theres the question anyway... but im starting to get the drift of what they did. thanks!
