Just because you liked wicked doesn't mean it deserves all these awards. Wicked is probably my favorite show, but I realize that creatively...it's pretty sloppy and in the end it could've been better. I'm one of those people who will sort of forgive that because I'm so attahced to the story its telling and the message its giving. But, I understand why one would rather see something more original or something with more creative merit win.
Who are you referring to? If you read my previous post, you'll note that I was not out to necessarily support WICKED (as I'd like to), but I was criticizing a member for insulting and questioning the tastes of those who do support it.
And yes. In my opinion, it did deserve all of those awards. Well, not all of them. Actually, read my other, other post on this thread to check out who I would have picked to win.
i agree with you BroadwayGirl, despite it's numerous faults I really did enjoy Wicked. It most definitely should not have won in all those categories but it is one of those cute, flashy, fun musicals that people are drawn too. I think when people voted they just picked everything from it because they had seen it, liked it, and didn't know what else to pick. (this is not what i did btw) I also think some people may have been trying to predict tony wins as oppose to voting their choice for which was truly best. Oh well all I know is that I am unbelievebly excited for RAUL!! At least this board knows who really should have won!! I know all you Esparza heads are out there cheering for him!!

You liked Wicked, but don't think it deserved awards? I'm sorry, sweetheart, but I don't understand what you meant. I'm not being sarcastic, I just wanna know where you're coming from.
I understand her reasoning cuz I feel the same way. It is a fun show, it's a very cute story and I don't see how someone could walk out of it and not have enjoyed it. There were also nominees that deserved the awards more than it. Overall it was nice, it's a big, expensive, happy musical but it gets sloppy in some technical areas.

Some of you do understand that this is just a fans awards, right? I mean this type of thing is made for "Wicked freaks" and other Broadway fans on the internet who have an email address (or email addresses) and vote the way they want. I mean c'mon, is it that big of a deal? I find all the complaining a bit ridiculous for something that is obviously just a fluff poll.

I do not think that Avenue Q is the god send of artistic theatre. However, it is the little guy who beat the big guy. Avenue Q for all of its raunchiness is still very artistic and experimental. Wicked is packaged and harnessed while Q is fresh and raw. Avenue Q succeeds where Wicked does not in that it develops itself as past what you heard. Wicked is always the story of the Witch before Dorothy. Q is about relationships

Ok, too much Wicked. No Avenue Q?? I found that a little strange. I agree that Wicked should have gotten best score, but NOT best book. Jeff Whitty rightfully won the Tony, because his book was...witty, clever, hysterical.
Couldn't disagree more. Wicked is a little bit more than a story about a witch, a girl with a polka-dot dress, and dog. Read into it a little bit more...
And don't bunch all of the Wicked fans into one, obsessed category. Some of us actually saw all of the shows and know what we're talking about... Which is not to say that those who like Wicked are wrong.
What about Caroline, or Change? I feel as though that show was HIGHLY overlooked. It has more substance to it than both Wicked and Avenue Q (though I am obsessed with both of those shows as well). I'm not saying it should've won, persay, but just that it should be considered with Avenue Q and Wicked. I can't speak about BFO because I haven't seen it. Just a thought.

That is where you are wrong, Sumofallthings. Wicked is about far more than just a witch. Its messages are much deeper than that. I think people just see that it is a spectacle and completely miss the messages that lie within the story.
That being said, broadway86, this is one of Wicked's faults. I think that the creative team should've put more focus into the message behind the story rather than making it a crowd pleaser. I think some of the substance can easily get lost in the show, mostly in its ending. I love the story as a whole, but I think there are scenes that could've been fixed up, and certain aspects of the story that could've been emphasized more to create a stronger dramatic piece. Just for example...for the most part, I love what they did with the character of Elphaba, I really felt for her, but I think some of the things they did with Glinda and Fiyero seemed a little silly and turned parts of the story, which is supposed to be dark, into something almost like a Disney piece.
The story as a whole is something I can relate to and connect with, so it touches me personally, but it could've been more well-written. The score could've been more consistent...things like that. Basically, the story stands for many things I believe in, but its writing was not as creative as it could've been.
