PalJoey and I once went to the Stratford Festival. While there, we learned about the relatively nearby Shaw Festival, which was performing Barrie's "Peter Pan." So on the spur of the moment we drove over for a matinee and saw, among other delights, the best Wendy ever; convincingly childlike, teetering on the brink of adulthood, she was funny and winsome. We'd enjoyed that production so much, we bought tickets to that evening's "Hay Fever." At intermission we were astounded to see that our Wendy was playing Myra.

I wish I knew her name, but that 40-something woman was a hysterical Myra--described by someone as a "self-conscious vampire"--and the most persuasive Wendy I've ever seen.

Age and good acting have very little in common in my opinion.

I was reading over the summer about Diahann Carroll struggling with dementia and even being unable to sing anymore. I wonder if there were truth to those stories. I've heard nothing about rehearsals or seen any photos.

Diahann can make up her own lines, bump into the set, forget to exit, and I would still love her. She was freakin' Julia and Dominique Devereaux!

(But I hope she doesn't make up her own lines, bump into the set, and forget to exit)

Would it even matter in this production? Denzel is 59 years old.

My best friend and I always quote that ridiculous moment from the trailer for “The Hurricane” when he says, sounding about 75, “I’m 50 years old.

Do you think he ever looks back on that now and feels insulted by himself?

Haha... I tracked it down. It's at 2:01.

It never gets old.

Poor ol' Tab...

What if they were all using ambulatory assistance for this production? Diahann in a wheel chair (or Iron Lung), Denzel with a walker, Anika with a leg brace?

And of course, the bulging Depends should be clearly visible under their costumes.

We saw how it worked out when 51 year old Blair Underwood attempted to play Stanley in Streetcar. NOT WELL.

Is it okay to say that I really don't care one way or another?

“Is it okay to say that I really don't care one way or another?”

That’s how I feel. I can’t pretend not to understand why? it’s happening; that’s pretty obvious. But that doesn’t make it any less ridiculous. That said, I’m significantly less interested in this than I was in FENCES, which I considered a must-see that season. I’d only see this if there were absolutely nothing else worth seeing.

Since Sutton addressed me directly, I figure now's as good a time as any to respond:

"Why do you think the actor's age will be the same age as the character's? It makes absolutely no sense." You're correct. Or, you would be had I made that assumption. In my own post, I myself mention Denzel has a habit of reading younger than his age, an acknowledgment that would run counter to the idea that I was assuming the characters' age based on the actor playing him.

"And once again, the playwright never specified the ages of the characters."
This has been flatly proven false.

"You're just going off the actors that have played the role before."
This is also flatly false, as I in fact do not mention a single previous performer and state an objection strictly based in the text and the relationships it requires.

Given that you, in later posts, have agreed with my point of view, your post addressed to me is altogether incoherent.

Words don't deserve that kind of malarkey. They're innocent, neutral, precise, standing for this, describing that, meaning the other, so if you look after them you can build bridges across incomprehension and chaos. But when they get their corners knocked off, they're no good anymore…I don't think writers are sacred, but words are. They deserve respect. If you get the right ones in the right order, you can nudge the world a little.
