Posted: 12/5/14 at 10:36am..... But doesn't one have to be "likable" to play Harold Hill? We actually root for Hill, in the end, because he is a likable fellow. I have never seen Seth play a genuinely likable character.

I like MacFarlane's voice and he has a wonderfully douchebaggy kinda charm that I find...terribly hot.
But every time I see him sing, he seems self-conscious. And that's just not a quality that should exist in a Hill.

Posted: 12/5/14 at 11:27amHe's got the conman thing nailed. Yet there's something odd about his face, when the camera zeroes in on him singing. (See THE VIEW this week). His smile is chilly, he has an odd blankness, especially in the eyes, a certain flat, shark-like quality. And there's one line in MUSIC MAN that must land: when Hill says "oh, there's always a band," or words to that effect. He must halfway believe in his own bs. If he's so slick he's all mendacity, he's an empty vessel, not worth saving by Marian. In effect, they must rescue each other for the love story to work. Hill has to show you glimpses his core humanity, buried as it is. I think McFarland could work at it, but work he would have to.

He would be wonderful in the part. Entergetic, engaging, doesn't need to read his lines off a teleprompter, and a good singer.

Agreed, Ado Annie. Well said.
From his interviews to his award show appearances to his work in both television & film, it seems he does lacks empathy, likability, and sincerity. The three traits that make us, as the audience, want to root for Harold Hill.
I'm not sure he is a skilled enough actor to overcome all that. Being as sick of Neil Patrick Harris as I am, he would still make the most sense and is already in a longterm deal with NBC. Seth is not.

I think he'd be great but I also think he'd turn people off.
Has Conan O'Brien completely burned all of his bridges with NBC? I'd like to see him as Harold Hill.

No thanks.
His schedule most likely wouldn't permit it, but the only big name I can think of right now for Harold Hill is Jimmy Fallon. I do enjoy him and at times I think (with training) he could definitely be good at the (very minimal) singing the role requires.
I'm not familiar with O'Hara but she has a beautiful voice and did well in the last broadcast so I think she'd be a beautiful Marian. Isn't she doing King and I in the Spring though....?

Uh. MacFarlane is not today's Harry Nilsson. That's just ridiculous.
Agree with Robbie, Liza, Ado and others. He has a great voice, he's a wonderful voice actor and obviously has comedy in his DNA, but as a "live action" actor he's completely and utterly soulless.

I think it's the star, not the property.
The SOUND OF MUSIC was a massive event because no one had tried to broadcast the stage show before (unlike PETER PAN) and it featured as Maria a genuine musical mega star (unlike this PETER PAN). The second year was never going to have the feel of last year's production, but I think choosing a show that's been broadcast several times before and featuring two lead actors who are not necessarily marquee names made it feel less.
I think THE MUSIC MAN is closer to THE SOUND OF MUSIC in terms of being loved as a family-friendly show that is also of incredible quality. PETER PAN feels like a kids show of decent quality. Put the right star or stars in it (and for this, you really only need one star), and I think we'll see it better received than PAN.
