Sherie was fantastic in the show, I love her and I love the musical.

I love Ursula in the movie. She's always been one of my favorite Disney villains, but I absolutely adore Sherie's interpretation of the character. I like the fact that she's back and forth with the accents and different little things. It reminds me of (this is a really bad reference) but Kelly Ripa's character on the show, Hope and Faith. She used to be a soap star and is always going back and trying to act like her old characters. I feel that Sherie does the same thing with Ursula. "I Want The Good Times Back" is where I see this the most.
I was thinking about something recently. I'm sure someone will "verbalize" this better than I'm about to do. I think the fact that Ursula and Triton are strongly connected as siblings completely throws the story line.
In the movie I never understood why Ursula wanted to see Triton "wriggle like a worm on a hook." She seemed so sinister and menacing, like everyone is fair game to her; she may come after anyone. The unknown..it's scary. Now, in the show, I completely understand her. Wouldn't you be upset if your favored (strictly because of gender) older sibling disciplined and embarrassed you in front of the only society you've ever known? In the show Ursula is smart; she's forced to comply with a directive issued to her by, in my opinion, someone less competant, someone not as sharp as her simply because he's male and he has the trident.
Simply put, I think this is a situation where the audience relating to the character just does not work. The villain, by definition, is someone who should not be understood. Take WICKED, for example. Once we understand the Wicked Witch of the West (Elphaba), is she the villan anymore? No, she is not. Morrible is...because we cannot predict her; we don't know what she has going to do next. If we understood her, than she would not be the villain, either. And so the cycle continues. There must exist an element of the unknown, which we do not have in our Broadway Ursula.
Don't misunderstand; I love Sherie and her voice, and I don't really even mind the "switching". It's the storyline. Also, Sherie never really takes it to that next level of anger/passion with her character. Preceding Ursula's demise, when Ariel snatches the shell, Ursula from the movie would not take the time to explain those two scenarios of consequences. Ariel has Ursula's life in her hands. She would say, "Smash it, and you die!" or "You'll kill your father!" To me, there's no anger or passion. She's simply explaining a little situation...la dee da...
Quick question: why does Ursula (on Broadway) have that gray-shaded triangle shape on her back?
Also, I, too, would like to know what section of Blockbuster I will find Ursula's latest film. Completely understand the thought; I just thought it was a funny reply.
I really liked her

Ohh my god! Sherrie is amazing as Ursula. End of.
Okey, I get that everyone has different tastes and opinions, but seriously, she takes home the pay check every week because she is good at what she does and obviously tickets did sell.
And also.. I read a comment on this thread that said something about: ' Sherrie isn't deep/twisted/ too understandable in her characterisation': but if you look at every Disney film in detail (I took Media Studies, analysed Disney lots) you will see that it is always the same pattern: Happy families; villain intrudes; price saves the day; happy families again. Therefore, if Sherrie strayed from the plot and made her character complicated and unpredictable it wouldn't work because audiences know what is about to happen anyway. They would just become confused and dislike the show for straying from the original.
Anyway: If Sherrie did play Ursulla exactly the same as the film's Ursulla you would have all comented saying; 'Ohh she didn't make it original, she didn't make it her own or experiment!!' sooo...
I LOVE SHERRIE ?

WTF?!
Award for pointless bump of the year.
Though I love "fans" who don't even know how to spell her name.
Film or stage, Ursula is the greatest camp villain of Disney canon. It won't be long until Charles Busch gets his tentacles on the role somewhere.

Sherie Rene Scott hated the role, the costume and the kids at the stage door and it showed in her performance. It was a total walk through for her.
I think Charles Busch or any other gender illusionist would nail the role. :) Charles Busch uses every muscle in his face when playing a part to add nuance to every line. Something Sherie couldn't be bothered to do.

Naa, I don't think soo! It looks to me like she enjoyed herself.
How are we both to know anyway. You don't know if she hated it, neither do I. But it looked to me like she loved it on stage.
I saw it in Denver prior to broadway. She sure seemed to be having fun with the role the evening I saw it.
I saw it shortly before she ended her run. She was clearly over it-and for the record, I love Sherie.
Fan of the woman.
Thought she was less than great in Mermaid -- but the whole show was less than good.
WHY are we talking about this NOW?????? OY.

How did someone find this thread (and decide to bump it) after 2 years??
This is sort of off-topic, but I recently came across a fantastic demo recording of Howard Ashman singing Poor Unfortunate Souls. It includes two extra verses that were cut from movie. Has anyone else heard it? I think it might be floating around "that site". After hearing it, I definitely think Ursula could effectively be played by a man in drag.
Sherie has nothig on these guys:

WOW! Blaxx-that was intense. I think that was the gayest video I've ever seen. I'll stop complaining about Sherie toute de suite!!!
