This suit is just a money grab. The show is not about their lives. It's about Greenberg and the group called 'The Shirelles'. Nothing to see here.

When I saw Baby, It's You all I learned about The Shirelles was that they were discovered at a high school in Passaic, NJ. There was precious little biographical information about them in the show, unless you're counting which venues they played on tour and with whom...

Unless they just want to shut the show down flat, (which is silly cause if it's a hit (?) it could bring some interest back to them) they should wait till the show recoups and look for cash then (wasn't there a similar case at JERSEY BOYS)?

I'm sure the lawyers were consulted and have made some protection for the piece.
As to why now... you only sue when there is money to be made.
They may get some money. They may not.
It is up for Judge Judy the musical to decide.
(or whichever judge)
It will go to litigation of they will settle. And probably never reach a judge.
And the case will be dropped.
All in a days work for an attorney. Ain't America Grand?

You know I've thought about this carefully and the only real travesty taking place is that Dionne Warwick's Psychic Friends could not alert her to the fact that this was going to happen! If I were her, I'd ditch them quickly...tsk tsk tsk.

CurtainPullDowner, I don't remember if there was a lawsuit aimed at Jersey Boys, but there was the lawsuit against the former cast members who were doing that "The Boys in Concert" tour.

Are they not billing this as "The Shirelles Musical"? I believe I've seen that tag line, yes?
That's always been the problem with this show - it's about Ms. Greenberg and The Shirelles are supporting players. If the surviving member of the group now owns the trademark, sorry, there could be problems.

bk -- If you go to the show's website, you'll see that they aren't using the trademark 'The Shirelles' anywhere. There's a reason for that.
It's legal to tell a story about something that actually happened. I'm not seeing a TM infringement anywhere.

I had the same question as CarlosAlberto about the absence of Will You (Still) Love Me Tomorrow. The absence of such a major song in The Shirelles career was pretty striking. I thought other Goffin-King songs have been in other musicals so I wondered if it was something about this show that caused clearance problems.

I got a good laugh when I first heard about this because the same person suing is the same person who used the logo from the production in Pasadena for an album cover and didn't ask permission to use it.
