I feel that broadway should dim their lights in honor of a great actor who cherished live theater and brought laughter to broadway and off broadway audiences.

I'm guessing they won't. He only appeared in a few pieces of live theater and his career has primarily been focused on film/television. That said, I think it would be a lovely gesture if they did (Gandolfini didn't appear in a lot of plays and he had the lights dimmed).

Look at the practice of dimming the lights. It's only done for famous people. They don't dim the lights when some dancer in the chorus has passed away. I don't think it should be done for Robin Williams because it crosses over into "celebrity" rather than "honor."

If anyone ever tells you that you put too much Parmesan cheese on your pasta, stop talking to them. You don't need that kind of negativity in your life.

I say yes. He may not have performed very often in live theatre but he is an inspiration to so many actors who are.

The New Amsterdam definately should, and Robin Williams wasnt some 'celebrity', he was a genuine star and an extremely gifted actor and comedian who has appeared on broadway and inspired many. I dont think Broadway 'should', but it would be nice if they did

Absolutely not. No. That is a very special honor reserved for a very select group. I like Robin Williams but this is out of the question.

LOL, lovebwy, I can think of people omitted and others included. Robin Williams is at least as worthy as James Gandolfini, IMO. He did perform stand up on Broadway (I know that's not 'real theater' but it is a contribution) and did off-Broadway and Broadway work. As I said, his inspiration to others in the field might be enough reason.

I think the dimming of lights should be reserved for great people like Merman and Martin, Tennessee Williams, the wondaful Elaine Stritch, Helena Modjeska, the Lunts and Mrs. Fiske.

Barbra Streisand only did two Broadway shows 50 years ago -- I Can Get It for You Wholesale (1962), Funny Girl (1964) -- but I'm willing to bet they'll dim the lights for her when her time comes.

Williams also did two -- Robin Williams: Live on Broadway (2002), Bengal Tiger at the Baghdad Zoo (2011) -- and they were fairly recent.

Williams also did off-Broadway work and comedy at Broadway houses (other than Live On Broadway) prior to his Broadway debut.

While not considered "Broadway" because of the theater it was performed in, he did Waiting for Godot at Lincoln Center.
