Oh lovebwy, please! No one is forcing you to witness this! I think it's fitting. He INSPIRED composers and actors and was an active participant (he did several comedy shows back in the day before his one man show in the 90s). He was incredible in Bengal Tiger (had I been a nominator he'd have had my vote-and I thought it would be a misfire-he was engaging and very, very good-no ounce of trying to steal the scenes from anyone-he was the role).

Don't worry, tomorrow Ms. Bacall WILL be honored, too, so you can unclutch your pearls!

This is an honor for a GREAT performer who just DIED! Why not let Broadway dim their lights in honor of him? Did he not do live performances? Did he not do at least 1 show on Broadway. Was he not beloved by many? Look, the decision is made, and I think Robin Williams deserves this honor.

Robin Williams was a performer of unparalleled energy, empathy, and generosity, who inspired performing artists of all stripes- not to mention audiences around the world. He was one of the few who could transcend being a "movie star"- he was an icon.

Absolutely, the dimming of the Broadway lights - a place where Williams did, in fact, perform- is a fitting honor to a legendary performer.

Only a truly deluded, bitter person would object. And one has!

I refuse to dim my lights for lovebwy....When he dies, I am going to turn on all my lights in protest. Sing Robin Williams version of "Blame Canada" and then end it with me standing on my coffee table saying "Captain, My Captain!"

I love Robin Williams. I'm very sad to have lost him.

But he was Hollywood. He ain't Broadway.

Betty Bacall on the other hand made a career resurgence on Broadway, and was nominated for multiple Tonys.

It is a 1 minute tribute that very few people notice even happens when it takes place.
BTW sunset today in NYC on April 13 is 7:56pm and the tribute is at 7:45pm so the change in light won't be noticeable. There is a brief mention on the 11pm news that it happens. They aren't minting coins.

It is a nice gesture.
If you don't want to see them turn the lights out for the minute - keep your eyes close.

I don't know if I begrudge it per se. I just think it should be a very rare occurrence.

That said, I love and respect all that Mr. Williams brought to the world, and I'm very sorry for his family.

I think that the dimming of the lights at Mann's Chinese is a lovely gesture. I'm glad they did it.

On a related note, what theaters participate in the light dimming? When I went to Studio 54 for Elaine Stritch (since it was the closest Broadway theater to NY City Center), they didn't even do it... and there was a small group of us there waiting for it.

If we're to bitch about inconsistencies in honoring the theater's own, why do we have two theaters named after critics, but no Williams or Miller? Why do critics trump two of our iconic writers? Walter Kerr and Brooks Atkinson were formidable; but they were not artists. I don't mind theaters named as homage to their contributions, but it bothers me that our greatest playwright haven't been comparably recognized.
