I wouldn’t say that I obsess over shows. Right after I see a show, or buy a new recording, I go through a phase where that is the only thing that I listen to, but I wouldn’t say that’s an obsession.

They're all MUSICALS
No one is obsessed with straight PLAYS
Do you think it has something to do with Cast Recordings (that you can listen to them over and over, away from the theatre itself)?
Just pondering...

In terms of listening to the cast recordings and seeing the show / watching footage:
Currently....
Curtains
The Producers
Previously:
Spamalot
Joseph
My very first obsession was Nicholas Nickleby - the 1982 RSC production which aired when Channel 4 was launched in the UK. An amazing production, one of the greatest pieces of theatre I've ever seen. I wish I could have seen it live.

I saw Company over thirty times during the original Broadway production and went through every cast change (except I missed Dean Jones). I have the CD for that production, the London production (which was the Broadway cast with Larry Kert superimposed, the 1994 Broadway revival and the following London revival. I was never as intrigued or excited by any play to that extent. My two friends and I snuck in sometimes and went backstage to fawn (and I imagine irritate) Elaine Stritch and Barbara Barrie.
I took my 16 year old daughter to the revival which was ironic given that I was in high school when it opened. It was a huge disappointment with the minimalist approach which affected the music, the staging and the interactions. Oh, and I saw it at Westbury with Vivian Blaine.

So many from the time I was about 6:
Two by Two
The Rothchilds
A Chorus Line (original)
Sweeney Todd (original and revival)
Company
Follies
Les Miz
Wicked
Pippin
SITPWG (original)
DEATH OF A SALESMAN (with Dustin Hoffman STRAIGHT PLAY)
Spring Awakening
Little Shop of Horrors (original off b'way)
De La Guarda (off b'way)
Gosh...I'm going to stop now....because it seems I need a life. (But I am OLD if that helps!)

If we're not having fun, then why are we doing it?

I think one thing that helped fuel my Les Mis 'obsession' was the fact that it ran for so long, and there were hundreds of cast changes
The chance to see different people in the roles, and see how much that can change the whole feel of the show, made it continually interesting
Some casts I fell in love with and saw MANY times (like the 10th Anniversary cast and first closing Broadway cast), most I just saw once to see what the show was like with this or that actor in it

No one is obsessed with straight PLAYS
Do you think it has something to do with Cast Recordings (that you can listen to them over and over, away from the theatre itself)?
I was obsessed with The Vertical Hour while it was running. Since it closed, with no cast recording to keep playing, yeah, keeping up the intensity of the obsession was hard and it faded.
So yes, I think cast recordings have something to do with it.
Oh, and add Sunday In The Park With George (revival) to my list after last night. LOVED it!!

Not quite sure about dates, but they have been Rent, Hairspray, Wicked, Legally Blonde, Avenue Q, and a Chorus Line. Now I'm in a very long Spring Awakening/Bare/Cabaret phase. =)
