Posted: 9/24/09 at 11:43amThere used to be (still is?) a miserable recording of FOXY. It's in wretched sound and it's not Bert Lahr or the original cast. I'm at work right now, but I'll pull it up when I get home to provide more details.

There was a recording of the Musicals Tonight Company revival of "Foxy." They did a decent job with it.

Yikes, Ed and A8...without Lahr, what's the point?
A crappy recording is better than none I guess.

For several years the studio cast album of ANGEL was available to the public. All you had to do was send a check to lyricist/book writer Peter Udell's publishing company and the album was yours. It's the original cast too which is great featuring Frances Sternhagen, Fred Gwynne, Don Scardino and Joel Higgens. In fact I'm staring at it right now.
Once again DOLLYPOP. You're the only one who seems to think Ginger Rogers recorded the London cast album of MAME. Are you sure of this? At the time I recall hearing there would be no recording of the show because Rogers large salary made it a no go. The producers had to pay her two weeks salary for the recording and opted not to and she refused to do it for less.

Posted: 9/24/09 at 10:06pmSorry I'm late on getting back on this. Yes, it was Musicals Tonight and the part of Foxy (Bert Lahr) was done by that-now-household name, Rudy Roberson. Doc (the Larry Blyden role) was played by Rob Lorey (sorry, who's he?). I really don't recommend it, however. If anyone's absolutely DYING to have it, I'll give it away.

Posted: 9/25/09 at 1:05amI really wish they would release Dracula! I know the show got horrible reviews, but his music is so epic!

Posted: 9/25/09 at 2:06amI don't think they should release the Dracula concept recording at this point. Everyone who wants to hear it already has a copy and probably won't spend more money on a physical CD if it were to ever be released. They would just lose even more money.

But the show itself was funny, and had a number of good songs. As I said, I thought the Musicals Tonight presentation did a good job with it, and showed that the musical itself is still worthwhile.

I've heard that Rogers demanded too much money as well, although I've also heard that the recording was made, but was to everyone's dissatisfaction so they didn't release it.
As for 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue, this is the first I've heard of any out of town studio recording. As per most sources, Bernstein was adamant in refusing to allow the score to be recorded. (And more's the pity, in spite of the show's failure).
I don't know what Jay's problem is re: Anyone Can Whistle and especially One Touch of Venus. They snagged Melissa Errico fresh off of her success in the Encores production but it has yet to see the light of day. Here's what I pulled from the record label's website:
"In spite of the downward trend and depression experienced by the music industry World wide, in this year 2002, we at JAY carried on defiantly. We continued to record and maintain a healthy schedule of new release. However defiant we were though, we had to exercise prudence by holding back the completion and release schedules of the big budgeted recordings such as ONE TOUCH OF VENUS, ANYONE CAN WHISTLE, FIDDLER ON THE ROOF and other complete recordings in the 2CDs JAY Original Masterworks Editions. We will resume the release of the titles in the series once the music industry has stabilised itself and has returned to some semblance of normality."

AKA give up all hope for ACW and OTOV ever being released.
