GYPSY. My favorite is probably the Angela Lansbury British production--her delivery is closest to my idea of Rose (although Zan Charisse is a bland Louise, and it's disconcerting to hear the Cockney accents of the newsboys--as if we'd wandered into OLIVER). Tyne Daly's recording has a kickass orchestra and the best supporting cast, but Daly's own vocals sound strained and flat--I think you had to have seen that production live to appreciate her performance. The Bette Midler TV production I own, but I just find it bland and overmixed and careful. The Bernadette Peters recording has an oddity--an incredibly sharp, clear, piercing tone in the trumpet solos during the overture--it really makes you sit up. Bernadette's delivery (especially of the included dialogue) comes across as Bette Davis-bizarre on a recording. Ironically, the only cast album I don't own is the Merman original; I'm just not a fan of hers (she doesn't exactly have a lot of layers) and the 1950s tempos are unbearably lethargic.
